    Need to replace scope but...

I inherited this old gun and wanted to know where I can find these types of mounts so I can update this scope since it is in bad shape.
    1. Can I purchase some new ones like the ones in the picture?
    2. Do I need a gunsmith to change this out for me?
    3. How much would it run?
    4. Do I have other less evasive actions to replacing the scope with a newer one?

    Any info is greatly appreciated.

1.Usually the claw mounts are built by one manufacturer, if it's a well known maker there will possiibly be some around for sale but a new set can be made by a real gunsmith and shouldn't cost more than $700 - $1000

    2. The base for the claw mounts may be soldered on or milled directly into the action. Yes, it will take a gunsmith to change them and you would destroy a very collectible rifle.

    3. More than a new rifle would cost.

    4. I think that you mean "invasive". Yes, write down every mark, name, number etc. on the rifle, scope and mounts and ask on a one of the classic Mauser rifle boards, or even on accuratereloading.com (gunsmithing board) or nitroexpress.com (Mauser forum) and aske what the gun is worth. Someone will be able to educate you on it.

The scope is repairable and can be restored to operating condition which will give you a very, very desirable gun.

      Jimmy,

What you have is what's known as a "Cigarette Mauser", made after WW-I by usually small companies from Gewehr 98 Mausers. If the scope still works then you're looking at a value of $1200 - $1600 depending on what cartridge it's chambered for and the condition of the bore. If you get lucky and it's made by one of the well know gunsmiths, it could be worth 10 times the amounts above.

The value of this type of guns is based a lot on the condition of the scope. If the scope is bad, then the ring/mounts are useless which means the claw mounts in the receiver are useless. Don't throw anything away because in the worst case you could have the mounts cut off the rings and have new rings welded on to fit a modern scope. This kind of custom work is not cheap though as you'd probably be looking at $500 to get the custom ring/mounts made.

Frank you are awesome. Thank you for the info.
The scope works but has a nick on the lens closest to the eye.
As for the rifle it is a .257 Roberts and works like a champ. Many Deer and hogs have fallen to it.
I want to replace it with a newer better working one since I still hunt with it.
But if it is worth more the way it is I will leave it alone.
        Thanks again for the info.
