    Old eyes and red dots

So in the never ending quest of getting old, I am now officially part of the reading glasses club. I put up a good fight for a the last few years.

Now that I'm relying on reading glasses full time I've noticed that shooting handguns has become a little more difficult, I usually just wear yellow tinted non-prescription eye pro. I want to add a red dot to one of my pistols - does the red dot make shooting easier and can I leave the reading glasses at home?

I need to go try/experiment on my own but want to hear other's experiences. My eye doc exam is coming up and I could easily get a pair of decent readers for the range if needed.

Sight enhancement becomes a necessity with age, just as does hearing enhancement. You will learn to love your electronic sight.

I did some testing recently of my new rd, If anything, I would use my distance glasses next time I shoot my red dot. I expect a bit more bloom on the dot but expect to see the target better. It is a better experience for older eyes! Kept having to use my readers to make the windage adjustments though!

You will be amazed. The front sights were getting blurry for me too. I've added rd to both duty and backup. Don't hesitate to do it. Well worth it!!!

A good eye doc can make glasses with a longer focal plane than reading glasses

Ones where the focus is on the sight.

I find the green dots to be much crisper than the red.

Diopter and etched reticles are a God sent for aging eyes. Everyones eyes are different and some are more low light sensitive when it comes to picking up irons, so a fiber optic front may help. I find that Dawson fibers are the brightest. Also not all RDS will be round from a T1 to a T2 and also depending on the brand. For me the larger 4moa comp series works the best especially with a 3X magnifier. Another great option is an LPVO with a daylight bright dot.

Another consideration is if you have a degree of astigmatism. In that case, a red dot (or green or whatever) can be more of a red sparkle or a red starburst. This can be mitigated by lowering the brightnesss or trying out different optics to see how they appear. This is not a deal breaker, its just how your eyes are.

Also, a red dot can improve your overall shooting. With the dot you will see all the movement (you) before, during, and after the shot breaks. Talk about feedback!

For me trijicon and holoson are where its at. I have 3 dot optics for my pistols, and will for sure get more down the road. I enjoy shooting irons, but hell, it gets harder and harder as time goes on.

I'm really liking the Prism optic I got from Primary Arms. The reticle is pretty useful after you watch a very short video on it you'll think why someone hadn't done it sooner. It's especially handy for older eyes.
