It's been a long 11 days, but I finally get to bring my K98 home later today. I'll get some nice pictures up once I clean it up a little bit. I'm still not sure what I want to do about the thick coat of shellac on the stock, does anyone have any suggestions in that area? I'd like to remove it without destroying its value. Got a nice selection of ammo, 1946 Turk (25 split necks out of 2 bandoliers,) 1973 Romanian, 1956 Yugo, and (I believe) 1948 Portuguese with FNM 48 as the headstamp. I'm hoping to go shooting tomorrow or Wednesday, very excited to pull that trigger.

Sounds like a Russian capture? If so, most guys just strip that off with lacquer thinner and rub on a couple coats of tung oil finish or boiled linseed oil.
What kind of stock? Solid wood or laminate? Flat or cupped buttplate? What code on the receiver ring? Oh heck, you know the answer - POST PICTURES!!!

I am 99.9% sure I am going to strip the stock. It is so shellacy and greasy, I hate it. It has its fair share of dings that need to be steamed out. The metal is good though. Would someone be able to tell me which parts are supposed to be bare metal and which parts are supposed to be blued? I thought the stock lug, recoil lug, and buttplate were all supposed to be white, but I've seen black buttplates on bringbacks in photos. I'm assuming this came packed in cosmoline, the original owner didn't say there was any on it when he bought it from Big 5 but I got a nice gob out of the cleaning rod hole. Anyone have any idea how the parade hook barrel band ended up on this thing? I thought they were for the older Gew98 rifles only.Last edited by Hundids; 02-18-2014, 9:30 PM.Comment

Stripped it down, very disappointed that the stock is split where the lugs are. Is this very common?

Stock number doesn't match receiver and barrel. End of stock has a "44" stamped, I'm assuming 1944. Also has what appears to be a "B" and then the rest is illegible. Only other marking on the wood is a tiny "x" right below the bolt where your thumb goes.

Hidden rust.

I also just realized something about this stock that I can't seem to find on any others; I see that there are two sets of recoil lugs. The front one, and then one directly beneath the bolt handle. If you look where the bolt handle cutout is on the stock, you'll notice a flathead screw there. I didn't see this feature on any other k98 stocks. Anyone know what's going on there? Thanks.Last edited by Hundids; 02-18-2014, 6:55 AM.Comment
