M2 ammo has a specific powder burn rate.

Most modern ammunition is using a powder that has a burn rate out of the recommended range for the M1 Garand. Use the wrong stuff and parts can become bent/damaged due to the increase in operating pressure.

There is a commercially available gas plug that allows you to tune the function of the rifle, bleeds off excess and keeps your parts from becoming damaged. (Shuster-http://www.schustermfg.com/)

By the way, most folks already know this, but there is the one guy in a thousand that doesn't. Sorry.
The op-rod already has a slight bend to it, so don't try and "fix" it by making it straight.

Here you go, that should give you a better idea. The short answer is, you'll bend or damage your oprod.

the cmp special garand is not a newly designed rifle.

the age of the rifle has nothing to do with it being able to handle the pressure, the design of the rifle does.

Man... what a day. I definitely have a much better appreciation for this rifle now that I spent so much time working on it. All the cosmoline is off, everything has a nice new coat of oil and all the important friction spots got a nice dab of grease.

The sad part is that I have to work the next 2 days so I'm going to wait until next week to take it out to the range.

          Its gonna be awesome.

          Time for a drink!

it always feels good to shoot $6 worth of ammo in about 12-15 seconds lol.

The good news is that you won't have to do full tear down again for quite a while. Congrats on getting everything stripped and put back together, you've earned that beer.
