M2 ammo has a specific powder burn rate.
Most modern ammunition is using a powder that has a burn rate out of the recommended range for the M1 Garand. Use the wrong stuff and parts can become bent/damaged due to the increase in operating pressure.
There is a commercially available gas plug that allows you to tune the function of the rifle, bleeds off excess and keeps your parts from becoming damaged. (Shuster-http://www.schustermfg.com/)
By the way, most folks already know this, but there is the one guy in a thousand that doesn't. Sorry.
The op-rod already has a slight bend to it, so don't try and "fix" it by making it straight.
