Knucklehead, wow! Checked out your post on taking your Snider to the range, that's an impressive group. Would not have thought to use Paradox bullets but I will definitely add them to my list of possibilities...

There are literally dozens of ways you can load a Snider cartridge from what I've seen. I had it narrowed it down to three possibilities that I would try first:

    1) .600 round ball with approximately 75 grains of black powder, no need for a press or special tools, apparently all you need is a Snider or 24 Gauge case that will chamber, add primer, powder and wad, press in ball with thumb (you may have to open the mouth a bit), cover exposed part of ball with lube, and voila! Fun time at the range!

    2) .585 round nose Minie in a formed Snider case. Two options for powder; fill a 2" case with 75 grains of 2F black powder or; Cut your cases to 1.5", and fill with 30 grains of IMR 4198 smokeless if you're using a heavy bullet (480-500 grains), or you can push it up to 31 grains for a lighter bullet (350 grains). These are the smokeless loads offered by Cartridges of the World which they have field tested. Even if you go smokeless you should lube your bullets like always.

    3) Because I live in Canada, I can't get a lot of things you folks in the States can. When I saw that Ten-X makes modern hollow point ammunition for the Snider I wanted to try them out, but naturally they won't ship anything here. They will, however, sell me just the bullets as long I ship them to my cousin in New York first They're 480 grain hollow point hollow base bullets (.585 diameter) that they apparently designed specifically for Snider rifles. I'm buying some and intend to to try them out when we start reloading (most likely I would load those with 4198). I'm hoping to take up the challenge of hunting with my Snider sometime so if they turn out to be accurate that's what my friend and I will use them for.

Check out Ten-X's websites for the ballistics on their Snider loads:

Wouldn't make a habit out of buying their ammo though at $140 a box

that's not me for the record. I've just dug around a lot of this stuff when interest grabs me. I do intend to acquire a snider or martin sooner or later though, as i'm growing more and more fascinated with the early cartridge guns.

I have a Nepal Snider that I have made brass cartridges for it out of 24g full brass shotgun hulls, 70 grains black powder and .577 hollow base bullets. I have shot it. It makes very big holes. If you can get it for a good price it is worth it.

You can all so make shells out of 24g plastic hulls sealed with wax and you don't need reloading dies. Midway and Grafs & sons has everything you need.

Ah ok, well hopefully whoever it is is being honest about their marksmanship I've read it takes a fair bit of experimentation with these rifles to achieve good accuracy.

I should correct myself on something, measured the smokeless powder cartridges I have and the cases are about 1 19/32" long, not 1.5".

that was VERY impressive accuracy, but let's face it, just about any of these old guns has the potential, there's just a lot of factors that come into play and those aren't always all there. really diggin' these old black powder cartridge guns though. if I ever start making some money again i'm gonna have to get me one or two...

Anyone who is a fan of Kipling or Jack London has to like Sniders.

There is an interesting looking little Turkish Snider in the rack at Faith Armory in Temecula that I've been eye-balling for a long time - I've always wanted a Snider for my collection - but since I'm downsizing the collection and trying only to add AK's and 1911's when necessary, I haven't made any serious attempts to acquire it.

As I recall, someone brought it and an Egyptian Remington Rolling Block in to sell on consignment but never got back with the price he wanted for them. I'm not sure, but the Snider might need a firing pin....if so, I don't know if one could be located or would have to be made. But as I recall it is a rather handsome looking little rifle and in nice condition.

If anyone might be interested in it, call Faith Armory, ask for Adam and tell him Marcus referred you, and see what he can do for you. Adam and the other folks at Faith Armory are good people and will do you right.

Peter Dyson in the UK sells brand new firing pin assemblies for Snider-Enfields...

Atlanta Cutlery appears to have some used assemblies also.
