i recently inherited an octagonal barreled marlin '94 in 38-40 that is in remarkably good condition for it's age. i ran the numbers (114552) on a site that a google search produced and it came back as having been manufactured in 1894. i almost have a hard time believing this given how well preserved it is, but i know it was in a family members posession for 40+ years and was told it was fired on one occasion in that time frame. when i got it i also got a half full box of ammo that looks to be from the '70s. i will post pictures tomorrow but i would say conservatively the rifle is in 8.5/10 condition. i have 3 y/o rifles in my safe that show more wear than this does and i would like some reccomendations for a reputable curio & relic expert in butte county that could give me good information on this rifle and possibly an apprasial. pics will be up sometime tomorrow but im interested in having this checked out in person.
