    7.62x54r

I know there's tons of places to buy this stuff, but I'm thinking of picking up a spam can or two. Where are you guys finding this stuff for good prices? All I really care about is light ball and lead core. My rifle doesn't stick TOO bad with steel cases(shoots better with brass or copper washed) so it's not a huge deal.

Second question, if I get one without a can opener, how do you open those puppys?

If it helps I'm in Sacramento, but willing to buy online

    Check this website:

If you're looking for range safe ammo aka non magnetic, I believe the only one is the Yugo Heavy Ball.

I got my last two spam cans from AiM.
About 90 a can, plus shipping.

Buy two cans and they throw in an opener.

Really? I've shot a variety before. Wolf LB, Hungarian, Czech all LB out there before.

If you're going to be shooting at an indoor range, I highly recommend the Yugo heavy ball. It's currently available at Ammoman, Widener's and Polygunbags.com. It's great stuff that is 100% non-magnetic. Widener's and Polygunbags seem to be about even on price + shipping and are a bit cheaper than Ammoman. It seems like Bulgarian, Russian and Czech stuff is available right now. Other than Yugo, I only have some Russian and Albanian but have not tried either since they are both magnetic & I'll have to wait until I get out to the desert. The Albanian QA leaves a lot to be desired, lots of dented and creased brass cases. I've heard good reviews of both the Bulgarian and Czech ammo. As far as opening a can without the spam can opener, I've heard of people using screwdrivers or cold chisels with hammers or dremel tools. Personally, even using the can opener, it was really hard to get the corners open, I ended up using the can opener + rubber mallet to cut the corners. If it was in the heat of battle, I would've been dead with a half opened spam can.

My nearest range is outdoors. Call me a wimp, but with the short pull the heavy ball hurts my shoulder. Though last time I did shoot 60 rounds of LB first lol. I couldn't barely hit the target at 100 yards so I want to shoot at 25 and 50 and adjust the sight if I need to. So I want to be able to shoot a lot in one day.

Ammoman has the Russian stuff for $195 for 880 rounds shipped. I don't know what AIM is charging for shipping but if it's anywhere near $35, they'd be about even. I am sooo tempted to get a case but I don't think I can sneak that into the house and hide it from my wife.

Ammoman is steel core stuff though right? Don't know if I can shoot that at Cordova(my closest range)

AiM is $120.72 after shipping. Gotta see if River City can beat that.

Edit: Just tested the 40ish rounds I have left, looks like everything but my Yugo 198gr(heavy ball) is the only thing non-magnetic.

$120.72 after shipping? For 440 or 880 rounds? If it's 880 rounds, I won't even try to hide it from the wife! It looks like anything that's marked LPS is steel core light ball. Unfortunately, it's really hard to tell if it's steel core without cutting a round in half with bolt cutters since it all seems to be steel jacketed and will stick to a magnet. Might I suggest a slip on recoil pad and the Yugo heavy ball?

For 440 rounds. If it was 880 I would have bought it already lol. I guess I'll just buy whats cheapest as it's all seeming to be magnetic

As mentioned above, the only non-magnetic 7.62x54R surplus on the market is the Yugo heavy ball. Everything else has projectiles with either a steel jacket, a steel core, or both.

I gotcha, I thought there were other kinds out there because I had mis-ID'd my non-magnetic as czech heavy ball, it was Yugo. I really didn't enjoy shooting the heavy ball much, so I may just go with whatever cheapo LB I can find. The ammo I shot last time was mostly not the Yugo HB, so they must not have cared much.

The "no magnetic ammo" policy is more of a So-Cal range thing.
