I posted earlier having bought a 1908 Mannlicher Schoenauer in 8x56 MS and that it had a Jaeger scope mount base (which it didn't) which turned out to be a Griffin & Howe - which it may be.
The rifle and mount in question.
Based on the one semi-circle cut on the top of the base plate, I'd say this uses a single lever to lock the ring base in place. GH used to make one, which I'll probably never be able to find. Does anyone know of another maker round about the time the rifle was made or slightly later?
I have a half dozen complete Jaeger and GH mounts. Rings on the Jaeger and GH are generally interchangeable, depending on Jaeger model. There are a few differences in the screws used to attach the rings to the base. And the clamping system used is different between the two. But a Jaeger scope ring base can be mated to a GH base plate and the clamping fit to work.
The challenge is the tongue & groove (dovetail) fitment. GH (tongue) is slightly oversized to the Jaeger (groove). Which making fit is a bit above my pay grade.
I want to keep the current base plate because it is so nicely fitted to the stock and receiver. Note the screw heads are all qualified and although D&T all the way through, they've been finished flat with the inner rail so as to be invisible. I don't want to disrupt that with a new G&H dual lever base.
Any suggestions?
