    Mauser Chileno Modelo 1895

Chile is known for great wine and delicious sea bass. But among C&R collectors, it is also known as a customer for some really great Mausers! I recently lucked into this nice Chilean Mauser M1895 made by DWM and got it home today. It's in really good shape with all matching numbers and no import marks. Bore is mirror and a dirty bolt face is the only sign that it has ever been fired. Blueing is great and really the only issue is some really dried out and stubborn packing grease.

It is actually very similar to my M96 Swedish Mauser. Other than the chambering, most of the differences look pretty minor. It is my first rifle chambered in 7x57 Mauser so I am curious as to how it will shot. I have shot old Mausers in 7x57 before, but it was just a brief 5 shots at a steel plate, then return the rifle to the owner with a "thank you!" It's a nice cartridge and I will handload for the South American long rifle. Just gotta order some brass, dies, and bullets!

Anyways, here are some really bad pics. All markings are sharp and crisp, but I cannot take good pics to save my life!

Here's a look at the Chilean Coat of Arms on the buttstock:

Gorgeous! What is the serial number prefix? A-B-C were Boer contracts intercepted.

Unfortunately this one has an "L" prefix serial number, so no Boer contract connection. Thank you for the compliment. It does look good, and much better in person.

They are just beautifully made rifles. Elegant in their simplicity and execution.

The butt stock cartouche is not one I have seen before. Can you post a closer pic's?

These are real nice rifles to collect.

I hope this comes out okay and I apologize again for the terrible pictures. It is the Chilean Coat of Arms that also appears on the receiver ring: on the left is a deer with a crown on his head. On the right is a condor, also wearing a crown. These are two animals native to the Andes and therefore somewhat of a national symbol for Chile. The center is a shield with a five-pointed star. Above the shield plumes branch out and below are what appear to be banners(?)

That's a different crest. Never seen a 1902 dated stock cartouch.

              Neat!!

The rifle is really nice to look at and examine closely, as the workmanship is top-notch. That it has been around for about 116 years is pretty neat as well. Glad you enjoyed the pics, bad as they are.

                      Super sweet

Contract Mausers are far more intriguing than German ones.

Looks like a nice one, Ken! You'll bring it out to the next shoot?

Thanks, guys! The Chilean M1895 will for sure be making an appearance at the C&R Shoot soon. I was thinking May rather than April, since I still have to develop a handloads for it. Once that is squared away, you all can definately shoot it!

Sutcliffe, I love them all! Gonna look for a Brazilian next, but that is getting a little ahead of myself. Still need to shoot this Chilean
