    Lower Part Kit Assembly

Ok, I just bought an RRA Stripped lower.

Now, I have never worked on an AR/M-16 before. I own a Mini, but Mini's are like garands, and no help to me in this situation.

My question is this. Should I install the Lower Parts myself, with the mag lock kit, or should I have a Gunsmith do it? Is it really that hard, or is it really just putting springs and pins in place with punches? (The lower part kit is made by RRA to)

    Thanks for any help!

Put it yourself. Really easy. You only need punches, a screw driver (flat I believe) and a small rubber mallet if you have it. Go to ar15.com they have a tutorial on how to put it together.

ALSO. Word of advice when you get to the springs, make sure you do that in an enclosed space. Chances are the spring will fly off somewhere.

Mind-bogglingly easy. If you pay a gunsmith to do it, you'll be kicking yourself for it later.

A hammer, 3/16 and 1/8 pin punches, flat screwdriver, 5/8" wrench for the extension (unless your going for a collapsable stock),CLP and moly grease are all ya need. A small scrap of 2x4 helps to support the receiver when trying to install the trigger guard pin.

A padded vise is nice (shop rags work fine), some masking tape is good to have (so you dont mar up the finish while installing the bolt catch roll pin).

You dont really need these, but I splurged on a 6 dollar tool that makes the front pivot pin real easy to install, and a Birchwood-Casey flat black touchup marker in case I nick something- Brownells and Fulton carry them. I also got a barrel/stock wrench at a gunshow for 20 bucks, and a false mag to hold the receiver in a vise. If you're only building one rifle, I wouldnt bother with a bunch of specialized tools that you'll probably ever use again (unless you plan to do work on it later) but I have built 3, and have 10 more to go (and counting) so I figure they may be a good investment.

Do it yourself. Even I was able to put two of my three together without help. I just followed the guide on ar15.com. Believe me I can't change my oil but these were easy.

Looks like I will be doin it myself!

And one other thing. Which mag lock kit should I buy? I need to put that on before the Pistol grip/ telescoping stock.

Definitely do it yourself. I just got in the Prince50 kits the other day and put one in a customer's gun. Man I love those things. I used to be a die hard Sporting Conversions fan, but I am ready to replace my Sporting Conversions kits with the Prince50. I highly recommend them and if you need one, send me an e-mail. guns@tenpercentfirearms.com

And oh God no! Do not buy the AR15plus kit, ever! NO NO NO NO NO NO. All it is is a washer and a lock nut. That magazine is absolute crap. Stay away from that kit like the plague.

Do it yourself... the only troubles will be getting the pivot pin and trigger guard roll pin in yourself.

Get the Prince50 if you want a nice kit for a great price. Get the SAS kit if you want the highest quality kit for a fair price.

As everyone else has said, assemble it yourself. However I use my drill press and a brass rod to press the roll pins in, its awesome. Here are some pictures I've been meaning to post of my setup. Then its just a matter of pulling down and checking its all straight .

EDIT: The pictures are MIA, replacements will be found soon though, hang tight.

                        Clever.

The first couple I built I tried the vise grip method and wound up rubbing some of the finish off. Now I just put a piece of cardboard on the receiver and use a punch. No more scratches.

Get a nice looking mag! 10rd with detachable bottom.

Prince50 mag lock is nice, but if you want to go cheap with a nut and the plastic thing just send me a stamp and I'll send you a set.

You guys are making the detent pin thing too complicated. All you need to do is push the pin and spring in with the front takedown pin, push in detent flush with the uncut side of the takedown pin, push through, and then twist. Voila!! No bag, no special tools, nothing needed.
