    What mill bits for 80%??????

Can anyone please tell me what type/size/etc of mill bits are needed to complete a QD 80% with the QD jig? Takes Morse #2 taper tooling if that makes any difference.

For instance, if someone has the 80% lower, the jig, and a mini-mill, what would they need to complete this task?

    Thanks!

You need 5/16 to do the trigger slot and 3/8 to the main pocket. You could actually use the 5/16 for all of it but it might take longer. I put a link from Amazon for the ones I used. You also need 3/8 regular drill bit for safety selector hole and 5/32 for the hammer and trigger pin holes. I did a QD 308 lower and tactical machining AR15, the process is pretty much the same I linked the 308 jig instructions from a thread here the holes are the same on both.

I would consult with the manufacturer of the jig. Most of them will give you the specific bits/tools/end-mills they want you to use.

Also, some jigs are not universal... in other words only their specific lower will work with their jig.

Thank you guys!!!!! Greatly appreciated. Couple more questions for you pros

        1. How long should it take a non-retarded person to complete their FIRST 80% ar15 on a manual mini mill? (roughly....are we talking 20 minutes or 8 hours?)

        2. Does anyone have a good link to ar15 instructions? The 308 ones posted above are FANTASTIC but I cant find instructions for Ares, TM, or QD jigs.
        Thanks again!

An experienced machinist, perhaps an hour.
An un-experienced machinery user, 3 hours.

Thank you guys!!!!! Is it safe to "free hand" on a mini mill while using a jig? Ie: can I hold the jug and move it around by hand or do I HAVE to keep it clamped to the sliding table?

Randal is being modest. I will fall under that not so experienced class, I expect this to take my at least a few hours over a couple of days. lol

                        No.
You can expect broken cutters and possibly stitches doing it that way.
The whole REASON that a milling machine has a table is so that you can bolt things to it and then turn the cranks to move the part around while cutting it.

I'm only mildly retarded and I just finished my first 80% this summer. It took me 3 hours on the dot using a drill press. It was a broken arms jig/lower with their recommended tooling. Someone else posted their walkthrough video. I just watched it about 3 or 4 times and then wrote out all the steps in sort of a checklist format to refer to while in the actual process.
