    Finally shot the M1A outdoors!

Hello everyone! My Dad and I tried out Wes Thompson's Piru Gun Range for the first time yesterday. We brought along my M1A, M&P Sport, M&P 15-22, and my Glock 19 and Sig P226. It was a pretty windy day but the range wasn't very busy and we had a lot of fun! This was also the first time I had shot my M1A outdoors so I was very impressed with it's capabilities. I started off with my AR at the 50 then 100 yard line but once I brought out the M1A, I was going for the steel targets at 100 and 200 yards. The farthest target I hit was at 400 yards. Not too shabby but I definitely need to work on my fundamentals. I made a short video with some of the footage I captured on my phone so I thought I'd share. I am still very much a beginner to this sport so please go easy on me haha.

You will be more impressed with your M1A the more you shoot it. It has all the grace and power of the M1 with a lot of the quirks worked out.
I shoot mine in the steel silhouette matches -- 200, 300, 385 and 500 METERS, so figure about 10% more for yards.
If you don't handload, start as soon as possible. Custom handloads will improve your accuracy by a huge factor.

I plan to eventually hand load but it isn't possible to me at the time for various reasons. One day...

I have a video of my six-year old granddaughter shooting my M1A UltraMatch off the bench after one of our silhouette matches. I helped out, but she aimed and ran the trigger. Hit a 300-meter pig with her second shot.
I'll post it if I ever figure out how.

M1A's rock the house! You can work on your fundamentals with the AR, which is cheap. A good M1A is an awesome rifle.

A good custom M1A or national match M1A can be accurate as or even more accurate than most AR-10's or LR-308's. Glad you had some good bonding time with dear old dad.

Get that nose down on your thumb. You don't have a good weld.

congrats !!! you named both weapons that i consider to be the "best of" ever made IMO

                  best combat rifle = M14
                  best handgun = glock 19

if i had to sell everything i owned....those 2 wouldnt go anywhere

Thanks everyone! It was a blast (no pun intended) to shoot the M1A and it's always nice to spend some time with Dad. Russ69, I'll keep that in mind, thanks for the advice!
