Some of you may have seen some of my previous posts regarding my Auto Ordnance M1 Carbines. In a nutshell, I thought that these might be great HD guns, but I had not gotten them running well enough to serve in that role. 2 regular issues: 1) Failure to go fully back into battery when feeding rounds and 2) Hand guard coming loose/falling off while shooting (seemed to get knocked out of place by the action of the bolt).
Someone mentioned "Why the heck don't you send them back to AO?" I had bought them new in Nov. of 2012, so they were definitely under warranty. But I just didn't want the hassle of return shipping, etc. Plus I had read on line that the guns performed better and better with more rounds through them, and they did seem to be heading in that direction.
But then I thought, why not email Kahr/AO customer service and see if they can recommend things I might do at home to improve the performance of these rifles (I had 2). Kahr's response: "Here are a couple of return shipping labels - Send them back to us and we'll deal with it." O.K., why not, so I boxed up the guns and the original magazines (plus 2 more AO magazines I had purchased), and left them on my doorstep for the nice Fed Ex man to pick up.
I can't say that turnaround time was "fast", but then again I had other rifles to shoot, and I was not in any hurry. Plus I knew that all manufacturers were quite busy, as they were selling all the guns they could build. So I was not looking for a fast turnaround. Ended up taking just over a month from when they received them to when they came back to me at my front door.
I excitedly unboxed the rifles, and noticed that the stocks really looked much nicer than they did originally, and that the front hand guard fit much better/tighter than those did originally.
Enclosed paperwork specifies that they replaced the stocks and magazines for both guns. Nice! It further specifies that they lubricated and test fired the guns, and both performed O.K. If I had to guess, it seems like they might also have polished the feed ramps.
I had the chance to get to the range with them today, and I am very happy with the results. Using the AO magazines the performance was 100%. Using the Korean 10/15 magazines I previously tried (without much success) the performance was about 98%. Using the ProMag and USGI mags I previously had the performance was about 90%. And both hand guards stayed firmly in place throughout the range session.
I am much happier with these AO M1 Carbines now, and I believe that further shooting will make them run even better.
And I can also say that I am stoked with Kahr/AO's "after the sale" customer service.
Time to get these guys cleaned up from the range session and re-lubed for the next time out. If only the cost of 30 cal carbine ammo would just come back down again... I'm already looking forward to shooting them again!
