    steel cased .308 ammo?

I was looking for some cheaper plinking .308 ammo, any recommendations? I ve seen some steel cased russian ammo for .50-.60 per round.. any opinions on running steel .308 ammo? Its mainly for plinking and just regular range shooting. I know they may run a little dirtier than other ammo, but is it damaging?

What do you guys think of Herters .308? Colt .308? Tula/brown bear?..etc

How well it functions will probably depend on your rifle. Some rifles work well with certain types of ammo and some don't.

I've used a little steel cased WPA/Wolf ammo in a DPMS 308 (with a 24" barrel), as well as some zinc plated steel cased MFS ammo, and both worked well enough. If it's just for range use I'd say go for it.

Also, from what I've seen so far, Herters is the exact same as Tula. (It has a little Tula logo on the box, and the cartridges are stamped Tula as well.) So if you like Tula, you'll like Herters.

Does it have to be .308 (ie for a bolt gun) or can it be 7.62x51 as well? If you're shooting a semi auto then I have had great success looking for deals on Milsurp. The only annoying part for me is most milsurp is magnetic so I can't shoot it at the range I usually go to. But look on various ammo sites and also on the ammo FS section on this site- I have bought milsurp for 40-60 cents/round from various Calgunners in battle packs. My personal all time favorite is Portugese milsurp. Bought some battle packs from a couple different people. 147 gr and VERY clean, and these were dated like 1974. The accuracy I get from them out of my M1A Scout amazes me- certainly not talking MOA but great for plinking.

Also recently bought some South African Milsurp from fellow Calgunner in battle packs- Have not tried yet but have heard South African is gtg. Have a bunch of US M80 ball 147 gr have yet to try as well, not as clean as the Portugese, but it came loose in ammo cans rather than battle packs so I expected as much. All these I mostly bought in FS section from fellow Calgunners anywhere between 40-60 cents/round and some of that was even later this year in high ammo priced environment. If you stay patient and keep looking you can find it.

Amazing cause I have actually stocked up on 7.62 for cheaper prices than I bought some of my more recent Federal 5.56 (yes I admit I gave in and bought some 5.56 out of panic cause I was low and wanted to shoot and best deal i could find for 1000 rds of Federal XM193 at the time was 50 cents/round, dumb!)
But any 7.62 Milsurp from a country where you wouldn't mind vacationing in is gtg. I did buy some Belgium Milsurp that was very dirty looking compared to the rest but it was non magnetic which was a plus and after wiping it down looks fine- nothing wrong w primers, etc and have read good things about Belgium as well- Think I got 1,000 rds of it for around 35 cents/round- but that was few years ago. Stay patient and buy when a deal pops up, that's what I did past few yrs for 7.62 so when ammo crisis hit it didn't affect me- except I wish I had done the same for 5.56!
I heard German DAG is good for plinking as well.

Not damaging at all. (ignore the FUD regarding steel cased)
Accuracy is subjective to the rifle you're using. My experience is that it is as accurate as any milsurp that's out there.
          Very good plinking ammo.

Sportsman's Guide has Colt branded 168 gr in stock at about 53 cents a round.

FS: Atlas Bipod, Custom G23 RMR slide, ETS mags, Jagerwerks, Recover G26/27, CZ Scorpion bits, etc.

Mainly was wondering if steel ammo in the larger .308/7.65x51 round could potentially damage the rifle?

Of course not.. I m just saying because of the larger pressures would it be more prone to damage? I run 7.62 tula and wolf without any problems in my AKs..
