They obviuosly look badass and Cost an arm and a leg.. But what makes them so desirable? Is it worth the $2500 or so they go for?? I m genuinely interested.. Are they more reliable or accurate than other semiauto .308 (scar17 of course) or .223s out there?? Out of the two I m more interested in the scar 17..

SCARS are great because they are now movie stars! Featured in the movie Elysium the SCAR is still being used in the future in the year 2154!

I am trying to get on the waiting list for several places lol I want a SCAR 17s FDE !Last edited by safety-1st; 09-03-2013, 10:59 PM.Comment

I like the SCAR for how soft it shoots, how light it is, and the good (and familiar if you use an AR) ergonomics. It also breaks down very easily and simply. Price tag aside, there's a lot to love about the SCAR. I do also have an M1A and love that too :PComment

I would love to shoot one. From the sounds of it accuracy is there in spades and they are pretty light for a 308 semi.
That being said, its forged steel and walnut for me.sigpicComment

+1. There isn't anything else on the market that I can think of that is as light weight and soft shooting. They aren't cheap, but they are nice guns.

Main thing is the "cool factor". SOCOM uses them, latest and greatest, etc. But when it comes down to it, it is a projectile delivery platform. A $700 AR can deliver the bullet or a $2500 FN or HK could do it.
Theoretically, they're more reliable, due to the gas piston. But, I doubt you will push this to the extreme as a gun collector, or hobbyist.Comment

Because a science fiction movie is about the only place that stupid space boot stock looks like it belongs there.Comment

The 16 could be argued as a marginal improvement over a quality AR or many other 556 platforms.
Many of the advantages can be had in other platforms or are lost in Ca such as an ambi mag release or folding stock.
The 17 is a completely different beast and in a class of its own. While it may be the proverbial jack of all trades and master of none, it comes very very close to being master of several roles.
The biggest problem you will have with a 17 is figuring out how to outfit it. A non magnified red dot makes just as much sense as a high end 2.5-10x scope does.
Ive got AKs and ARs, believe me this aint no hype train.
