Some people think that the short action, by virtue of it being shorter, will be stiffer and provide better inherent accuracy.

I just think a short action is more comfortable to shoot. I also like guns with bolt lifts less than 90*. Maybe I'm just lazy.

Big difference for us match shooters is on a Long action when you cycle the bolt you have to move your head and lose your sight picture. On a short action you can cycle the bolt with out moving your head and sight picture for a faster follow up shot.

It's the indian, not the arrow. :P

Since he's asking the difference between 308 and 30-06, my suggestion is for him to get a 22lr and learn how bullet drop and windage works.

Not sure why he needs "stopping power" at 800+ yards. At that distance, it's considered murder.

If he's trying to take game at that range, shame on him.

I shoot a 700 in long action and don't need to move my head, and this is with a Vortex scope (aka shortish eye relief at max power).

If the op reloads, a nice switch to long action would be the 6.5x55 - longer effective range, less recoil, cheaper to reload - especially compared to switching to a 300 winmag

The best stopping cartridges start with a 4 or 5.

Saying that, practicing enough with these cartridges (even braked) to maintain proficiency at long ranges is not a lot of fun.

in marine sniper school in '80, the m-40-a1 shooting the 308...we were shooting at 1000+ yds

at that time..on the west coast..we were using redfield 3X9's.....quantico was using the "new" Unertl's
