    Best Ammo Choice?

    Hey everyone!

I've been looking on SGAmmo and SportsmansGuide for 7.62x39 and there are a LOT of different brands!

Which is the best? Tula? BrownBear? SilverBear? GoldenTiger? MaroonFerret?

The HP and FMJ are all roughly the same price, so I'm thinking just getting HP in case TSHTF, for defense. Is that a smart choice?

Is there one brand that is cleaner and more accurate than the rest or is it all the same?

    Thanks for everything, guys!

I use to shoot golden tiger alot. Strumghre or however you say his name did a youtube review on this ammo comparing it to wolf. Very cheap price by the way. The only ammo better then that is yugo surplus but its corrosive.

Wait the wolf is better or the tiger?

The problem is I look at reviews and, as it turns out, every single one is "the cleanest, most accurate round, and my AK eats it up"... And then 10% say its dirty than other rounds and that it isn't accurate.

      Every brand.

Golden tiger according to Strumghre is a little better then wolf. Just try out all of them and you be the judge. So far golden tiger has been GTG for me.

I think there's maybe 3 different plants in Russia that produce probably 5 or 6 different brands of x39. I've found the JSC Baurnal ammo to be cleaner (less fouling) but that's hardly an issue. I don't think one is better than the other since people who chrono those brands all seem to contradict each other in my experience. Sturmgewehr's study was pretty good. The point that you're going to be getting "minute of man" accuracy with most aks should tell you that the unnoticable differences in the brands don't really matter.

for plinking, i'll try to get cheaper stuff in the $0.20-$0.22 cent per round range. so brands like herters, tul, wolf, and bear are all on my list. i try to stay with SP and FMJ. Not too big of a fan of HP or maybe its because my AK doesnt like these as much.

when i want to go with high quality stuff, ill try to go with sellier&bellot, some of the U.S made 7.62x39 rounds. ill have maybe a 100-200 rds of the higher end stuff and HUNDREDS of the other stuff since i like throwing lead down range so much!

Golden Tiger I think is the best.

My normal go to ammo is herters, which is rebranded Uly (white box russian made, found at walmart ).

Never had issues with wolf/tula, but Uly just seems to shoot better.

The Baurnal plant which makes Brown Bear burns cleanly in 7.62x39 and I have yet to have any problems shooting it. Silver and Golden Bear are also made there, but have a plated case vs polymer or lacquer coated. Some people prefer a lacquer case to a polymer for it's better resistant to rust. I have yet to see a polymer case rust, but I don't live in a humid area. Golden Tiger makes a 7.62x39 boat tail which is a little more accurate, but I haven't tried it yet.

I left a couple poly coated in my garage/work shop for a bout 6 months on the floor. It rusted.

But I'm sure it was at one point or another submerged during the rainy season

I heard lacquer coated is bad for the gun because it hardens in the gun after?

What's better then: lacquer, poly, or straight steel?

Poly or laq are fine. Doesn't really matter.
