THANK YOU !!!! So what we REALLY have here is an AR with a different magazine release button . Right? Or wrong? So , when a person who has one of these moves to another state, they can simply buy ( on ebay
) a new mag release button? Right?

How could you have missed the whole OLL thing since June when you joined CalGuns?Comment

Yes. Alot of people build their own rifles (like me) and when you order a parts kit a standard mag-release button comes with it.
Their are a few options in CA to have a fixed magazine. Their is also a MAG-LOCK. It locks the magazine into place and the only legal way to reload the rifle is to open the upper receiver and top-load it. Whats great about the mag-lock though is when you go across state lines you can turn a set screw three times and it functions like a regular AR mag release.
I think the easiest way to do it is just to pop out the BULLET BUTTON when you get across state lines and install a standard AR mag release. Takes less than a minute and is the easiest way IMOComment

Here's the actual law.
12276.1. (a) Notwithstanding Section 12276, "assault weapon" shall also mean any of the following:
(1) A semiautomatic, centerfire rifle that has the capacity to accept a detachable magazine and any one of the following:
(A) A pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon.
(B) A thumbhole stock.
(C) A folding or telescoping stock.
(D) A grenade launcher or flare launcher.
(E) A flash suppressor.
(F) A forward pistol grip.
(2) A semiautomatic, centerfire rifle that has a fixed magazine with the capacity to accept more than 10 rounds.
(3) A semiautomatic, centerfire rifle that has an overall length of less than 30 inches.
So like others have already said, if you go with any of the features shown above and a fixed mag (bullet button) then you must have mag capacity of 10 or less per (2) above.Comment

Depends. Their are many many different configurations you can go with. Its like modifying a muscle car and asking, who makes the best engine heads?
If you want to build one you need to decide what you need. Here is the check-list for a new AR build
Lower Receiver - $90+ (I like Spike's Tactical lowers because they look cool)
Parts Kit - $60 (Stag, DPMS, etc)
Stock - $70+ (Remember if you want a collapsible stock or folding stock, you must have a fixed mag setup)
Upper Receiver $400+ This is the priciest piece of the build. I like Stag uppers, specifically the Stag 1H Upper. Its about $500 on RifleGear.com and comes with detachable carry handle
Thats all you need to build your own rifle. And it is very simple and doesn't take long. You also get the pride and satisfaction of building your own.Comment

If you currently own pre-ban magazines you can insert them into a featureless rifle. It is a felony to import high capacity magazines into the People's Republik of California. It is also a felony to insert high capacity magazines into a rifle with a magazine lock, yes this does include the bullet button.
Please refer to the link in my sig as it is a major piece of building a CA legal rifle.Comment

this thread is the cutest little thread around. I am moved enough to feel compelled to post an outdated pic of my own m4gery. since this picture was taken I have replaced the sling with a nice 3-point sling, added a magpouch to the buttstock, and replaced the crappy 10/30 c-products mag with one that actually feeds(dpms polymer 10 rd). she's so pretty now... =)
BTW: This is an example of how to build a legal CA AR15 with a ten round mag, bullet-button, and evil features. Its a Stag Arms.

Man..... NEWBIE...... be sure u KNOW the law before you JUMP in. (go spend a couple of hours OR a couple of days reading the "newbie thread" that is linked in my signature!)I am really trying hard to understand this. OK. Here we go. What I saw today for sale was : A stag arms M-4 type rifle that has all the features of an m-4 ( thats why I call it an M-4). Has a DETACHABLE magazine ( the kind that is and was used in AR type weapons for many years. ) The ONLY difference was that to release the magazine one needs a "tool". Everything else is the same as on any rifle of its type sold outside of Ca. PS. By the way I can make a very nice looking ring with that little tool
attached to it. So to changing mags quickly will be no issue. Are saying these new guns will not take old mags.?
M4 = M16 based weapon, either with select fire 3 rounds burst or full-auto.... depending on A#.... they are MACHINE GUNS.... not something you can *easily* get here in CA. I don't believe that Stag called theirs M4s.... Furthermore, a M4 is with a thread 14.5" barrel, a highly illegal item here in CA!! (unless u do a 14.5" barrel and PERMANTLY installed a 1.5"+ muzzle device....)
If you want "full featured" (w/ pistol grip), then even you have tons of "large capacity magazines" you CANNOT use them in the "bullet button" build. ONLY if you have a "no evil features" rifle, that you can use your pre-ban'ed "large capacity magazines", IF YOU ALREADY HAVE THEM..... DO NOT ask us how and where to buy new ones now..... that's is HIGHLY illegal!!!Last edited by Jicko; 01-20-2008, 6:18 AM.- LL
