I need advice for some mods for my old Savage 110

So my old man left me an old savage 110 (pre-accutrigger) in 7mm Rem Mag. This was the rifle I used to hunt with when I was a little guy, and my dad passed in on to me when he died. Needless to say, there is a lot of sentimental value there. However, there are a few things about the rifle that I hate. So here are my questions:

    1) I have been thinking about converting it from 7mag to 300 Win Mag. I believe the bolt face for the two calibers is the same, but the 300 is a millimeter longer. Do I just swap the barrel to accomplish this?

    2) I know savage makes some of their newer rifles with fluted/heavy barrels that I like, should I get one of these or get a custom heavy barrel?

    3) I hate the fact that it has an internal magazine. I would much rather have a drop magazine. Is there a way to make this happen? Maybe get a new stock and some other stuff...I don't know...

    4) I plan on getting a nice trigger for it, but there is plenty of info out there on this topic.

I know it sounds like I want a different rifle, believe me I am pretty close to going that route. Due to the sentimental value that comes with the gun, I would like to turn it into something that I like to shoot. Then I can give it to my kid when I kick the bucket and she can spend a few hundred buck modding it. Any advice would be appreciated.

The bolt and mag well is the same. You can get a prechambered barrel and with a set of go, no-go gauges you can change the barrel yourself.
If you want a good barrel and fluted etc contact www.ITDcustomgun.com
Brownells will have a trigger for you as well as prechambered barrels.
Bell & Carlson will have stocks or for more money McMillian can make one.
Not sure about the drop mag. It really never mattered to me when hunting.
A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

Last year. I got a GREAT deal on a Savage 116 / 7mm Mag. It's accurate as heck but came "plain Jane" so I decided to give it a "face lift".
      What I did:
      1) Boyd's thumb hole stock (nutmeg). Never owned a thumb hole and wanted to try it. It was a perfect fit but I had to get longer receiver screws ($8). (because it was synthetic) I really like it. + it looks pretty damn nice.
      2) Timney trigger
      3) Burris Fullfield II scope w/ decent mounts.

The blind magazine isn't a big deal to me as the Savages 110 to 116 series have a 3 position safety. Unloading can be done safely which I'm sure you've figured out.

      Keep the 7mm Rem Mag.

This is now my "go to" rifle, one of my most accurate and I didn't have to put a lot of $ into it.

Check with Sharp Shooter Supply, Fred has the parts to convert it to a detachable magazine.

That is a nice set up, but it looks like it only works on the .308 family of cartridges, unless I missed something. (It happens quite often, just ask my wife). If that's the case 7mm Rem Mag and 300 Win mag are not offered yet, correct?
