    AR Stock for Bench Shooting?

For bench rest type shooting at the range, what would be the top couple of choices for an AR15 stock (from a functionality and appearance perspective)? I like the Magpul PRS, UBR, and CTR, but would entertain others. The gun will most likely have a 20" bull or heavy barrel, a scope mounted on low rings, and a Harris bipod. I am also building a .308 AR, for the same kind of use, so am looking for the best stock for it as well (would like something different on each).

    Thanks,

    - Phil

The AR-15 is definitely not a benchrest platform. The A2 stock is probably the best stock for bench shooting since it gives you the natural surface on the bottom of the stock for varied rear rest placement to adjust elevation. But even if you find a stock that works, your main issue is the pistol grip. The pistol grip extends way down below the boreline vs other rifles.

Magpul PRS is a good option if the A2 stock doesn't suit your needs.

If you are shooting with a 20"+ bull barrel, you might want to buy a lead stock weight (or make your own) to go in the buttstock of the A2. It will balance the rifle on the bags better and also have the added benefit of even more reduced recoil.

Magpul PRS is an awesome stock for shooting prone or off a bench!!!!!

          Functionality, A2.
          Appearance, PRS.

The low rings are not going to work, but we will let you figure that out on your own.

I appreciate your response, but would like to understand what is behind your comments.

I thought the PRS might work better because it is flat on the bottom and the angle of the rifle would not change much as it slid back on recoil, vs the angled A2 stock. The PRS has a Picatinny rail on the bottom, so it may not slide anyway...

Why will the low rings not work? I don't want to buy something and not have it work. The scope will probably be a 40mm objective. Will the rings not work because of stock height/cheek weld issues, or...?

            Appreciate your input.

As an aside, will send separate note on barrel questions. I am looking to build a very accurate AR15.

            Thanks.

PLEASE get the PRS. I have a PRS on my .308 and I love it. Functional and beautiful.

                JGraham15,

Nice looking rifle! Mind telling me what float tube, scope, and scope mount you are using? I envy your concrete benches!

I plan on getting the PRS for my .308, such as you did. Thought I might try something different on the AR15, just to be different. I rather like the Magpul UBR for the AR-15, but maybe not as bench friendly as the PRS.

That angle in the stock is exactly what allows you to slide the gun to fine adjust elevation.

                    Cheekweld requires extra high rings.

On my "target" AR I have RRA 20" varmint upper, Harris Bi-pod, Ergo Target grip with base, Magul PRS, and LaRue tactical 30mm high scope mount.....works great

I think there is a little mono-pod that you can get for the PRS

                      don't have that yet.....

You should try the UBR then, I think Im going to use it on my hypothetical 6.5 Grendel build. Though I worry about it not looking right with a long barrel

Well... I traded away my PRS because I didn't think it was worth the $ over the A2.

However, it went on a real Mk12, and ever since I've wondered if I did the wrong thing.

When shooting I don't think about it, though.

How about the CAA SRS Stock? Expensive, but VERY nice.

The CAA stock looks like you need to put your ear on your shoulder to use the cheekpiece. If you're not using the cheekpiece, you might as well save yourself money and go for a collapsible stock.

                              Go with the A2.
