    Technical legalities of a magazine

Is it legal to purchase just the shell of a 30 round magazine? And then purchase a repair kit to make it a 10/30 functional magazine?

Technically, the shell is just a piece of rectangular metal or plastic, no?

It's legal to purchase all the parts to rebuild a magazine you owned prior to 2000.
It's illegal to assemble them into a NEW large capacity magazine.
No problem to build a 10 round magazine with the parts.

Buy all the rebuild kits you want.
Just make sure that you end up with the same number of large capacity magazines as you started with.

My understanding was that you could buy as many rebuild kits as you want, as long as you don't assemble them as 30 round mags (unless you are replacing an old 30 round mag you legally own)... this way it's not illegal to purchase 30 round mag replacement parts and convert them to 10/30 mags. But I'm also a noob and am not sure if my interpretation is correct.

That's the expensive way of doing it.

If you really truly legitimately just want to build 10/30's, then go to 44mag.com and buy a complete 30rd mag of your choosing. Before checkout, add to your cart the "rebuilt kit" option for 2$. They will disassemble the entire mag for you before shipping to you 100% of the parts.

You can then put it back together as a 10/30 legally. Or rebuild/replace any hi-caps you owned prior to the ban.

bdsmchs thanks for the info. That was exactly what I was looking for and found. Unfortunately, JOEKILLA is right. Everybody that has the rebuild option is out. I'm a little late for that boat.

Ahhh yes, I should have added another step:

1.) Wait about a month until the panic-buying has died down a bit...
