Scope base question

Here are two of my 1000 yard heavyguns. One is a 6 Grendel and one is a 300 Ackley. Notice how high the scopes are. No cheek weld at all.
Silhouette shooters who are always standing keep there scopes high and just use a tall comb on there stocks.
Scope height is discipline dependent.Last edited by LynnJr; 12-25-2016, 8:28 AM.Leave a comment:

The reason I'm asking is because, from my time in the marine corps, my shooting posture has definitely molded itself to the higher up sights of the m16, so I noticed when I was holding some bolt guns the other day that when I shouldered the weapon, my line of sight was not parallel to the barrel.
I think I might have to adjust my posture to adapt to the different sight level.Leave a comment:

I haven't noticed that before, I was always in the mindset anything touching the barrel could have negative effects. Learn something everyday.Leave a comment:

In long-range benchrest you don't want the scope real low as all you will see is the heat coming off of the barrel. That why you see strips of Mylar or Carbon fiber on the barrel held in place with Velcro dotsLeave a comment:

Right, I get that, but why do you want the scope axis close to the bore axis?Yes.
AR's must have the scope higher up because of the action design with the moving parts (buffer/spring) that come straight out the back of the gun.
If the scope were mounted lower on an AR, you would not be able to see through it due to the stock getting in the way of your face while trying to get lower on the stock.Leave a comment:

Is it better for the scope to be as low as possible on the rifle, or is it simply a matter of personal preference? The reason I ask is because I'm used to shooting ARs and obviously the optics on those are pretty high upLeave a comment:

Try the AD recon low QD Non extended mount. 20% off at primary arms. 142 shipped.Leave a comment:

I think I might be ok with -only- highmaster
...until I'm not, hahaLeave a comment:

You can become a HighMaster with a Remington 700 but you aren't going anywhere in Benchrest with a 700 as the game is much more difficult.
