    Leather Wrap for lever rifle

    Hello,

I have a Henry Big Boy Steel .357 and installed a large loop lever on it and would like to install some sort of wrapping on the lever.

Leather seems to be popular and that is the route I'd like to go.

Looking for suggestions (and links?) to do this.

    Thanks.

As far as lever wraps, I usually make my own out of an old chamois I had in the garage (never use it on cars any more since microfiber towels came out). You can make a pattern on paper, or just mark the chamois and cut it with a straight-edge and utility knife.

Then I lay it on a flat surface and mark hole locations about 1cm apart along each long side. Make sure that you make your holes far enough from the edge of the material so they won't tear when you lace it on. I usually leave at least 1/4" of "meat" between the hole and the edge.

Then use an awl to punch through all of your marked hole locations.

I use "waxed cotton" thread which I picked up at Walmart. Also make sure you have a large enough sewing needle when at the store.

I double the waxed cotton thread and start lacing, normally from the trigger-side of the lever. I loop the thread a couple times around the front of the lever so that the wrap won't move back during use. I also normally have the rough or suede side of the chamois facing out.

Works for me, and costs virtually nothing. This is a typical result on my competition rifle:

I haven't tried this yet but I heard that a good source of cheap leather is your local thrift store where they may sell leather vests cheaply. My old chamois is almost gone, so I'll have to check this out myself.

I personally have avoided leather wrapping steel since leather absorbs and retains moisture. I have read many threads in respective forums for lever action rifles where rust forms underneath the leather.

I don't know if there were other factors involved, but if I were to wrap I'd probably try a different material.

Mernickel makes them too. Not sure if they make one for the Hollywood loop.

Yes, I like RR's lever wrap the best of what I've seen so far but for my large loop it would cost $56.00 plus any shipping.
Seems a bit high for what you are getting.
