    First gen FN Special Police

I recently glommed what I believe is a first gen FN Special Police rifle. It was at an estate auction and it has not arrived at my FFL yet. Have a few pictures from the auction site and a brief description.

    Here are the pics...

    Auction description advised:

*FN Special Police Rifle .308 Winchester caliber, 26" round barrel, S/N FG106xx. Black finish, with black synthetic stock. Condition: Excellent.

It looks like an early FN SPR, and I can't find much information about the rifle. Anyone familiar with this rifle?

    Thanks.

If I recall correctly... it's basically a Winchester Model 70. Research that for more info.

I think that's right...a pre-64 style Model 70 with the controlled round feeding.

Not sure about the rest of it.

Its a model 70. Early FN's have 16 threads per inch on the barrel shank, like the Winchesters. Later ones have a finer thread pitch. I cant remember if it has a one piece bolt, or composite like late M70's, but I suspect they are heat brazed together like the post 64 Winchesters.
There may be other differences but they are minor.

By "basically" I don't know what that means but it is far from a model 70.
Mine is a one piece bolt.
You ought to give them a call with the serial # & get it right from the horse's mouth if you will.
Each time of talked with them they're really willing to spend time & help you out. Good customer service & tech folks.
              Good luck

It doesn't appear to be the A5M, no threads for brake or suppressor, but I suspect if it's like most FNs I've owned it's a sweet shooter.
Sub .5 moa at 500 is not a prob with decent glass. Mags for them aren't cheap, like anything is, at %60.00 each.

Double check that. All post 64 Winchester 70's have the bolt handle heat brazed on to the bolt body. You can see it by pulling the firing pin assembly out and viewing the bolt from the rear. I believe FN's are the same, but I could be mistaken. The body and lugs are integral, unlike Remington 700's which have the handle, body, and head (lugs) brazed and pinned together.

I believe the newer SPR's have a 24" barrel and a Macmillan stock. I've read that the first SPR's had an HS stock and a 26" barrel, like this one. But I'm not sure when the change took place or what other changes were made over the years.

I hadn't thought to call FN, but they would certainly be the people who know.

The SPR arrived at my FFL today and it looks great. Doesn't appear to have a mark on it. Came with a detachable magazine.

Better pics when the 10-day "cooling off" period is over.

What's there to know. I did a lot of learning on an FN SPR. It should be a decent shooter. I shot the barrel out of mine, but I haven't done anything since as the Winchester type action just isn't my flavor.

                            Good shooter?

Anything wrong with the HS stock?

Wondering why they changed stock and shortened the barrel.

Noticed at my FFL that bore is chrome-lined. Good? Bad?

                            Barrel twist rate?

                            Any known problems?
