I've got revolvers of various sizes from 1 7/8" up to 12". I find the 3 - 4" the most comfortable, well balanced. A lot depends on what loads you shoot; heaver loads will feel better with the longer barrel. For my $.02 go with the 4".

Nice read, thanks.
I failed to mention I like the idea of added velocity from a longer barrel, not just perceived accuracy. Physics tells us that force = mass x velocity,
therefore added velocity should mean a 'harder' hit. It could make a difference if defending yourself in the wilderness.

I believe the 6" is the way to go. I have a 686+ and the accuracy is great for a mini hand cannonsigpic

It's not a regular production run, It's a Davidson's exclusive.

Then be verified by a gunsmith.
OP, understanding the purpose of the gun, suggest the options on your poll should be changed to:
- S&W 686 'no-lock' 4" barrel
or
- S&W 686 'no-lock' 6" barrelComment

You mentioned wanting your wife to be able to handle this gun, you might take her along as well. The 6"er may be too heavy for her.John

How about a 3 inch like the Wiley Clapp Gp 100. I don't think any bad guy has ever questioned the barrel length of the 357 that stopped him in his tracks.Attached FilesComment

I would definitely go with the 4" GP100.
Ive owned the 4" and 6" GP100 and I've fired a buddies 6" S&W 357. I can honestly say that if you like finely made weapons, go with the S&W, there is no comparison.
Then again, if you want an ultra rugged gun, go with the Ruger.
The first GP100 I bought was the 6" and I hated it. The balances was all off and it just felt like a range toy. I sold it the first chance I got. The 4" has perfect balance and I could easily hit a torso-sized target with it at 25-50 yards if I did my part.I purge the wicked. The impious madness must end. Overall I feel like 4" provides the best balance and weight. Its still long enough to get good accuracy without feeling to front heavy.
Since half or full lug plays a difference, I also prefer half lug revolvers. Full lug revolvers really throws off the weight distribution.Comment
