New or used? Check your magazine to see if it's engaging the slide-release fully... if not, just changed out your magazine springs. As far as it dropping the slide with a full mag, it'll happen when your release is not engaging the slide fully from your last magazine, so the flesh one slamming home will drop the slide.

My bet is you have weak magazine spring.

You might be riding the slide.

Is this normal, or indicative of user error or perhaps an issue with my gun?
When the slide fails to lock back after the last round has been fired, USUALLY the cause is a thumb inadvertently touching the slide catch lever. Here's a video to help you achieve the proper "thumbs forward" grip.

          ^^^This

I occasionally have this issue when I switch between a 1911 and my 2022. I have to consciously think about thumb placement for a few rounds before I am able to correct it.
          Sorry, not sorry.

Dear autocorrect, I'm really getting tired of your shirt!

Ha! I knew it was most likely user error. Good to hear that it's a fairly common issue. In fact, I bet this is the cause of the magazine dropping the slide issue as well. As I stated I'm 98% sure I didn't hit the slide release as I inserted the mag but as NewbieDave pointed out, it was probably loose from bad grip technique to begin with.

Thanks for the video link. I'll have to try the bandaid trick as I practice from now on

            Thanks for the input everyone.
