GUNSMITH RECOMMENDATION for RUGER MK .22 pistols in So Cal

    Hi,

Does anyone know a gunsmith who does good work on Ruger Mk series pistols? Things like internal action smoothing/trigger job, tune sear, drill and tap receiver, replace extractor. They will be used mostly for bullseye matches.

I was planning on sending out to Clark Custom or others who specialize in Ruger rimfires, but would prefer to use a local gunsmith, only if they're experts on Ruger Mk pistols. Last guy I used claimed to know them well, but didn't even know how to install a VQ hammer bushing, which is super easy (and I just ended up doing it). Any recommendations? Bolsa gunsmithing?

No Bain and Davis & Jan at American Firearms - they are general gunsmiths. I need a Ruger guru. There has to be a gunsmith here in So Cal known for working on Ruger Mk pistols. Any advice? thanks!

I'd recommend doing it yourself. You'll learn a lot along the way and save some cash.

I installed a VQ Accurizing kit in my MKIII just by following the tips in this video. I'm a novice tinkerer. No special tools needed (just some punches, needle nose plier, some tape).

There are videos on how to disassemble the bolt as well and replace the extractor. It's pretty easy.

You want a Ruger guru? Try this guy...

Mark's personal Ruger MKII is a phenomenal piece of gunsmith wizardry. Ask him about what he did to his pistol. It's super slick. He's got the machinery needed to drill & tap. Plus, he's got a lathe and makes custom compensators. He does great trigger job & action work. He's worked on ALL of my pistols. Give him a call. You'll be glad you did. Cheers! --1911ShooterPhil

I just had my brand new 22/45 tricked out. Fully adj. VQ trigger, VQ sear/hammer, firing pin/extractor, Wolff springs, Tandemcross LCI/Mag disconnect. I polished the bolt & feedramp myself. I mentioned "my" mods because I wanted to do the same & did, not to boast.

Here's what I have to say. The more you spend, the more you're gonna expect & likely the longer you'll wait. I should have done my pistol, but knowing my guy was very good, he noticed a tight firing pin channel when I gave it to him. As we all know, a REALLY good 'smith will tune the entire gun. The VQ triggers assy, or kit isn't hard to install, I just didn't want to adjust a 2 way trigger. Tough call, if you have a really good 'smith, he'll style it up & likely only need it one time! Then again, you can buy more stuff & get it done in a wknd, lol!
Yes I took the pic, no I didn't go swimming!

I'd say order some VQ parts and install yourself (easy and highly effective)

If you arent comfortable replacing parts yourself, Randall Rausch (Ar15 barrels screen name here) can do it for you. He's a good guy and parts swap and adjust easily. He can also drill and tap. He is an AR expert, but also a bolt action guru.. And he has a very nice collection of rimfire handguns.... He knows his stuff... and is near you.

My mkII 22/45 has a full VQ trigger kit in it. My 10/22's have VQ hammers (which makes all the difference on the 10/22)

Go to "rimfirecentral.com" and start reading about upgrades. The list is endless.....

I find it really upsetting my good buddy from the military grew up in Carrol, Iowa.... I went to visit him twice... After the 2nd time, I found out the owner of his rental house lives next door to volquartzen.... I coulda had a tour and seen all their fancy toys.... Maybe even gotten range time with some of them.....

Thank you all for your feedback! I have 2 rugers with the VQ accurizing kits installed and am very happy with them (one I had a gunsmith install and the other I bought installed from first owner). I guess I will continue to use them in the 2 guns I would like tuned, my stock MKI Target and MKII 22/45 Competition.

I like the idea of using Randall at AR15Barrels or Mike at OC Gunsmith since they are rimfire pistol enthusiasts. But Randall's fair prices are hard to beat. I know some gunsmiths will charge a lot of money to install these kits which are pretty much DROP IN with very minor tuning required (and they seem to charge a lot for that tuning component since the customer doesn't know how to do it). I know VQ only charges $45 and it would be an understatement to call the guys there "experts".

Jan at American Firearms charged me $85 to install my VQ kit. I remember thinking to myself...did he really do an honest $85 worth of work or just drop in the VQ parts only to find they REQUIRED NO CUSTOM FITTING? Also, I thought I was paying him to do the work, but he had an intern or apprentice work on my gun and he had no idea how to install a simple hammer bushing which I ended up doing in 2 min at home.

So yeah, maybe I'll just end up doing it myself or have Randall do it since I need my MKI drilled and tapped anyways.

                Sounds like a plan......

The mkI / mkII the parts install on both will be the same except I think there is a different spring on the 22/45??

I did my mkII 22/45 myself. No issues at all. No fitting I can recall... but that was a long time ago.... Only adjustment is setting the trigger over travel screw and a dab of blue loktite on it.
