a friend disassembled, and cleaned a similar "hammerless" revolver, and couldn't figure out how to put it back together... had it in a "ziplock" bag for years, (and it is also an "owlhead, iver Johnson) 32 cal though

I think it's an earlier Large Frame.
~ The grips, if original, indicate it is not designed for smokeless powder.
~ Safety in the trigger.

If you would, add a pic of the top strap where the lock-up is.

Definitely IJ. I have a similar owl insignia on the butt plate of a 32 gauge IJ shotgun.
