    9mm vs 9mm Luger???????

I have a question regarding ammo, if anybody can help me that would be great! I am a first time gun owner and bought a S&W SD9ve. On my gun's barrel it just says 9mm and I bought ammo for it that is labeled 9mm Luger. I just want to make sure that this is the correct ammo for it before I actually take it out and shoot it. I am still new to all this and I'm trying to educate myself as much as I can. With all the different ammo out there is gets a bit confusing.

Thanks in advance for any help!

9mm, 9mm luger, 9mm parabellum, 9x19, all of these are differnt names for the same round.

Yeah, that's the correct ammo. "9mm" is a generic term, and there ARE 9mm ammos that will not work in your gun. However, those are always labeled more specifically I believe. If it just says "9mm" and was intended for the U.S. market, you are like 99.5% guaranteed that it's 9mm Luger, which is also referred to as 9x19, 9mm Parabellum (which means "for war" in latin), 9mm NATO, etc...

        You're good.

BTW there's 9x18, 9x21, 9x25 and others, all of which have their own names as well (browning, short, dillon, corto, makarov, etc)... but if it just says "9mm" it means Luger/Parabellum/19

            Yes, it's the same.

There's basically 3 major types of ammo called 9mm, and a bunch of other random crap.

9mm Luger / 9mm Parabellum / 9x19 / 9mm NATO - This is the most common kind. When someone says "9mm" with no other qualifier, this is almost invariably what they mean.

            9x18 / 9mm Makarov - Combloc pistol round.

9mm Corto / 9mm Short / .380 ACP. This is most often called .380 ACP, but sometimes has the other names. My wife has a .380 Beretta that is labelled "9mm Corto."

There's some other 9mm rounds, but less common.

(And no, I'm not counting .357 Mag / .38 Spl / .357 Sig, or anything else that's not actually called 9mm.)

Beware, there are other sizes of 9mm that are available that are NOT correct.

Just to be sure, I volunteer to test the whole box thru my 9mm.

                  @OP

The 9mm Luger you bought won't work in your gun. Send them to me and I'll dispose of the rounds for you.

My question is... WHY did all these different names for the same round arise?

And whatever the reason, can't they all settle on one name going forward?

They're not liberals, they're leftists. Please don't use the former for the latter. Liberals are Locke, Jefferson, Burke, Hayek. Leftists are progressives, Prussian state-socialists, fascists. Liberals stand against the state and unequivocally support liberty. Leftists support state tyranny.
