    Questions regarding Beretta PX4 Compact

    Hello all,

Long time listener, first time caller. What a great place.

Please forgive my ignorance in advance.

So, my wife and I have our evil black hearts set on the Beretta PX4 Storm (Compact, Type F, 9MM). The issue is, of course, one of legality in this crazy state. I have read and read and read until my eyes feel like they're going to bleed and I still can't make heads or tails of the regulations. So I'm hoping someone will take some pity and point us in the right direction.

Here's what (I think) I know. Please feel free to correct me.

The compact is not on the roster so I can't just go to a shop and buy it. Finding the full size seems to be no problem as it is on the roster. The subcompact seems to be fairly easy to find in CA, for whatever reason. Yet the compact eludes us, and of course that's the one we want.

I have seen some for sale online, but out of state. Since they all seem to come with 15rd mags I assume I can't have them shipped here. This may be a dumb question, but can I ship one here from out of state if they replace the mags with 10rd ones? I'm guessing no, but if the problem is the mag that seems like an easy fix. But that may just be my ignorance talking.

My next question is about the Single Shot Exemption. If anyone on here has done it I'd love to know turnaround time and cost (not specific, just general). Also if anyone thinks this is a feasible idea, or if better options are available. I have read this but the process is still a bit confusing.

It also seems if I do manage to find one in CA, I can do a PPT and avoid the regulation monster. Is it just that simple or is there more to it than that? Again, the process is confusing. I'm betting that's not by accident ;-)

I consider myself a fairly smart cookie but this is making my head spin. Any help anyone could give us would be greatly appreciated, and I will do my best to return in kind. Thank you guys and girls for all that you do!

The big question of course is how the heck do I get my hands on what I want?

From what I understand, only law enforcement can legally have a non-roster gun shipped to California from out of state, and even then many out of state FFLs will refuse to ship to California (because they have to pay an extra fee to be able to ship to California every year). A sheriff friend of mine had a really tough time getting a CZ75 shipped here. They make Cali legal ones (same gun with a 10rd mag) but they are super rare, so she had to get the 16rd version.

If a gun is off the roster you can't purchase it and have it shipped to CA. Even if it only has a 10rd magazine. The mag capacity isn't the only reason some guns are banned in CA. It could be the action, or the fact the manufacturer doesn't fill out the paperwork to apply to be CA legal. Good example is another Beretta... the Nano. It only hold 6rds but is not on the CA roster for some reason.

The exception to this is if the gun is already in CA legally. So if you own a Px4 compact in AZ and then move to CA you can register it here legally and then sell it here legally. Also if someone in law enforcement bought one from out of state and went through an FFL in CA legally then that person has the right to sell it in CA.

I have the full sized Px4 9mm and LOVE it. It isn't that big (fits in a Beretta 8" pistol rug with an extra mag) and the recoil isn't bad at all. So you might want to go to a local range and rent it. I can't imagine it being that much different from the compact.

    Hope this helps!!
