Is my new gun REALLY a new gun??

So I just picked up my new M&P 40c on Monday right before the range closed. Haven't had a chance to fire it yet. Today I was taking a closer look and noticed this.

Should a new gun have this brass ring?? I know it was fired at the factory, but I wouldn't think it would make this mark with just a couple test firings. Did I just buy a new, used gun??

Does the place let people shoot before buying? Was your gun on the list of allowed testers? That is just my thought. Or maybe an employee thought he should do a little breaking in for you. What is that word for when a king deflowers all new brides????

    Thats what I am thinking?

Sorry man, I hope I am wrong.

it could just be from the test firings. it isnt often that you find a gun that has NEVER been fired before reaching your hand. so ya, you got a new gun in my opinion.

I am not too famialiar with the M&P pistols but, no gun I own has the "brass ring" you are showing from any amount of firing.
Brass cases, as far as I have known do not leave a ring of brass in the position you are showing. Perhaps simply shooting it removed the factory coating?

Alfred, I hope you're right. It's not that I'm some gun snob who wants a "virgin" gun. I'm more concerned about why if would've been fired. Did someone return this gun? Can you even do that? Return a firearm??

Check for powder residue in the bore, bolt, firing pin, and even the lower receiver. From that pic, it doesn't even look like brass residue (looks bright yellow to me). Off first glance, my impression is no (so, not used), but there's too many factors that would provide evidence here.

Things to consider: check out the reviews on Yelp for this place, email/call S&W and ask for an explanation, ask the shop clerk/owner for an explanation, or anything else you can think of.

            Hope this helps.

Actually it does look like there could be some powder residue! Nothing in the receiver though. It almost looks like there may be a little rust in the barrel too!

That'[s what happens when you buy from joe shmuck... sorry but honestly. When I bought all my weapons they were in plastic sealed bags lathered in cosmoline. They tore em open and wiped off the serial # to write it down then showed me the matching numbers ala paperwork and weapons. /shrug. Ya get what ya pay for sometimes.

Check the spent case in the little envelope that comes with the gun. I bought a gun that had a painted case, yours may have also been painted and left behind some paint.

The packaging sure looked like it was new. I got it from "guns, fishing, and other stuff" in Vacaville. I've heard some horror stories, but decided to give then my business anyway.

Jesse and bob, Maybe you're right. I should just relax and get over it. Wouldn't be the first used gun I bought. I just normally like to know it is when I do.

I've never seen rings like that on any gun, even ones that have been shot 1000's of times. I dont think its used, but perhaps some special casing with paint when test fired. And I dont think theres rust in your barrel, probably just copper from the jacket of the projectile.

                          Just my two worthless cents.

Maybe the gun store was using a cheap yellow snap cap and it was a display pistol? Just a thought.
