recommend smith to weld/mill/install new site on Colt Gold Cup

    Hi

Looking for a smith who can weld up the cut outs for the current sights, the machine and install new novak's or something.

There's a roll pin that holds the sights in, that keep breaking, no matter many time I replace them

what part of CA are you in? there are good smiths in norcal and socal who know the 1911 platform very well.

check the american pistolsmiths guild site and see if any 1911 smiths popup for you.

Have you replaced the roll pin with a solid piece of drill rod yet? Have you installed an o-ring between the sight and slide for the elevation screw to pass through to prevent the sight from bouncing, which is believed to be be one of the main causes of the pin breaking?

My S70GCNM has solid drill rod peened on the ends. The repair was done about 30 years ago and hasn't broken since, I dont fire it too often but I don't anticipate any more problems from it.

Welding the slide up for Novaks and rebluing is a drastic step with significant loss of value to the pistol, but obviously the choice is yours.

i know what you mean, and i'm struggling with tthe loss of value factor.

prob with drill solution, is it sill "walks" out

maybe i'll go with the wilson combat sight first. I just hate the blade because it tears my hand up when racking the slide fast....I use the gun more for carry/tactile type stuff.

maybe i should just get another 1911

Properly done, the drill bit cant walk out. The ends are mushroomed/peened to prevent that.

Let me know if you end up changing out the stock sights. I have a new GCT and would like at a minimum to get a gold bead front, preferably night sights. Worse case you can always mail your slide to Novak and have them do the work. They charge $115 to machine/cut etc, the front and rear. I don't know how that price compares to other GS's.

Maybe pick up a new or used slide? A second slide would preserve the original's value, and might be cheaper than modifying your existing slide. I don't know if that large of an area could be welded up, and still look the same after a re-blue. That's a lot of heat. A dutch repair could be brazed in. Done right, it would look okay, but a seam would be visible.
