Loose Sig front sight, fix advice needed

A dove tail is the slot the sight ride in. The walls are angled (usually either 60 or 65 degrees). If you look at it from the side it will look kind of like a triangle.
Sights are retained with dovetail slots, pinned in place or staked.
A roll pin pin is a pin made from rolled spring sheet metal. Comes in various diameters to match a hole you would drill through the sight and slide.
Red or green loctite will hold. You are only talking about maybe .002 or less clearance. A slight interference fit is all that holds the sight in and either the slot or the sight has worn slightly.
To roll pin it you will need the services of either a machinist or gunsmith with a mill.
You can try shims but most will be either too thick or ones thin enough to fit will tear as you slide the sight in place.
Peening the edges of the slot like was suggested will also work but if not careful it is possible to have one of those oops moments and scratch/ding or otherwise deface the finish or deforming the slot too much.Comment

I don't know if you have the right site or not. It is not uncommon for what you are describing to happen to the correct site.
You won't mar the surface with a brass or nylon punch. At least I never have.
It doesn't take much to hold it in place. Loctite works great if the site is tight to begin with.I move slow but I make up for it by shooting poorly.
When I hit the lotto I'm only shooting factory.Comment

http://www.solarstop.net/mrshims/alumplastic.asp Would that website be appropriate? And which size to get?
As for the suggestions to send it into sig.. it's a 225/p6. I don't really feel like spending another $125 on the thing when I could get away with spending $5.
Plus, the sig is spotless and barely used. It'd be throwing away $ to send it in.Last edited by supersonic; 11-30-2007, 7:07 AM.

Thanks for the help everyone.
I'm going to go with option beer this weekend and see if I can pull this off with no expenses. I have a beer can and some red locktite, so we'll see.
If not, I'm going to order some of those shims from that website. I don't think I'm skilled enough to trust myself with a punch so I don't think I'm going to try that option.
As for the roll pin, that sounds like it'll end up costing more $ than I want to spend.Comment

I wanted to thank everyone as well, especially whoever recommended the aluminum can approach.
One minor correction: cut the aluminum sliver the width and length of the full channel for the sight and not the size of the sight. Once sight is on and centered, cut the remaining aluminum sliver on both sides to the size of the sight with a scalpel or a sharp(!) knife. I have a sight removal/install tool that I got from ebay for $40 that pays for itself over every time I use it.
Thanks again, my sight is centered and tight!Last edited by gman46; 05-28-2015, 11:45 PM.Comment

How loose is it? If it's too loose you can find a real thin sheet of aluminum to shim it to form a tight fit. JB Weld or red Loctite can also be used but that will require heat to remove. If you use a no scratch flat piece of plastic to remove excess and JB Weld you can use Q-tips and WD40 to clean the seams. Wait until it starts getting slightly tacky. The wise man said just find your place
