Why would you need a lock on it?

Since, it is not on the approved list, it will need an exemption in order to be able to have it transfered in CA.

Most common is the single-shot pistol exemption.

All that is required to make a "Mare's Leg" style pistol into a dimensionally compliant single-shot pistol, is to put a wooden dowl in the magazine tube to restrict it from accepting any cartridges. This should be done prior to importation into CA.

After the 4473/DROS + 10 day wait, it can legally be modified into a CA legal lever-action tubular magazine fed pistol, by removing the wooden dowl.

If it's unloaded and in a locked container, you are good to go.
The locked container can even be on your front seat.

More info is always good. You didn't include "why" in your first question.
I don't think a lockable case is a valid gun lock for the purpose of purchase even though it is a valid form of "locked container" for the sake of transportation.

If you don't already have a CA approved safe when you take delivery of the gun, you have to bring in a CA approved gun lock. You don't have to leave the store with the lock attached to the gun. Buy one of those $5 cable locks at Wal Mart, don't open it, and bring it in with the receipt to the store. You then have fulfilled that requirement. From then on, just transport it in a locked gun case, even one of those $10 Plano cases from Wal Mart count, just put a padlock on it.

        Dumb? yes
Legal? yes, and that's all that matters.

If I need correction, please let me know. Thanks.

Will that wooden dowel have to have a tool to remove?
