Here's an interesting read on bear defense:

the conclusions they come to on handgun calibers aren't too inspiring, but better than nothing. 12 gauge slug looks promising.

I`m going camping this weekend and i`m taking my gun. I`m not telling anyone I have it because I don`t want to make them uncomfortable. I`ll just keep it in my back pack. I plan on staying on top of the food chain if the situation arises.

You need to file the front sight off the pistol. After you shoot the bear it won't hurt as much when he shoves it up your *****
Using C Products 10 round magazines in my AR-15...just to be "safe"...

What are you a member of PETA? Or are you just being PITA? You don`t know what i`m putting in my back pack. No need for smart ***** answers.

I took my 6" GP100 on a 6 mile hike (one way) last year. I brought a speed loader with some wicked fast handloaded 125 XTP and another speed loader with FMJ's. The FMJ's were intended for bear if need be, and the HP's for hermit drug dealers.

There were 2 or 3 strangers yelling and screaming at eachother maybe 25 yards from our very remote campsite one night. They were threatening to kill eachother durring the fight, I was more than thrilled to have my Ruger on that trip. Not much anybody can do for you when you are miles from the nearest road/building.

I will never go camping without a firearm ever again. Im not worried about the bears, its the crazies in the world that unsettle me.

Now I have a Kimber 10mm and plan to take it camping this weekend. I will take one mag full of FMJ's and another full of HP's. I like having options =)
