XD9 Service Range Report. With Target pic.

Ok, so today I decided I would go check out the XD-9 Subcompact for a possible purchase. I had shot the XD .40 tactical before which is the one with the 5 inch barrel and it was a beauty to shoot. I decided I would test out the platform in 9mm because some platforms show to be great at certain ammo and not so great at others. It would also help me reinforce my feelings that the XD is a great firearm and convince me to plunk down the money.

When I got to the range they only had the XD-9 Service with the 4 inch barrel for rent. I decided something was better than nothing and would give it a shot. I bought a 50 round box of PMC 9mm ball ammo and a medium sized silhouette target.

Right off the bat loading the magazines feels pretty easy till you get to the last two rounds. Remind me of loading glock magazines. Nowhere near as easy as the fine Sig Mags. With the gun in my hand it felt like it molded to my hand better than any gun I've ever fired save for MAYBE a 1911. They really are that good.

I set my target about 9 yards away. I took aim and squeezed off a round, the trigger easy to reach with very soft take up, I would say it FEELS about 1 lb lighter than a glocks. Jam, the gun stovepiped.

Nothing serious, the round hit the target on the left part of the head box. I cleared the jam fired off the rest and the last round failed to feed. I checked the gun and sure enough. It seemed like they hadn't cleaned it since they put it up for rent. Residue everywhere all over the feeding internals. No lube on the rails.

I decided I would just shoot through the jams and stove pipes as I only had 50 rounds anyway. I was hitting high because the XD has a 6 o-clock hold. I just went with it. The flyers on the paper are all my fault. Either being distracted by the jamming or just me being a poor shot. I was also going relatively quickly because the low recoil of the 9mm round allowed for very quick follow ups.

The reset on the trigger was also surprisingly good and at no time did I miss the short reset trigger of my glock or sig. After resetting the take up was relatively short and very crisp and light.

Not a single round sailed around the paper I was pretty happy about that and the groupings are relatively decent in my opinion considering my total noobness.

I would say the rental gun experienced about 11 malfunctions. Either stovepipes or failure to feed the last round. With such a dirty gun I can't deduct any reliability points from it. Especially since when I had shot the XD-40 tactical that gun exhibited zero malfunctions and it too was dirty though not to the same degree.

I told the guy behind the counter that the gun was dirty and malfunctioned and probably needs a good cleaning and lube. He agreed with me but still put it back in the rental shelves hahaha.

I went to the gun sales counter and bought me a XD-9SC right there and then. Used my range membership to save me a few bucks and just finished filling out the form for Springfields 3 free mags and 1 pouch promo.

Sounds good...I'm contemplating a XD after I purchase a Dan Wesson 1911 first. So am looking for any info on XDs as possible.

I got my XD9 back in June and love it. I was torn between the Sig P229 and the XD, went with XD only because I was having a hard time justifying the extra $400. In my opinion, the Glock felt clunky in my hand compared to the XD, so I ruled that one out in about 30 seconds. I knew I wanted 9mm because of low recoil and cheap ammo. The Sig, by far, felt the best in the hand, and there is no comparison, but $400 better, I did not think so.

The grip safety, hmm, well, either you like them or you don't. I do not even notice it anymore, but still do not trust it as much as a classic thumb safety. Maybe in time I will.

My XD was shooting about 6" left at 25 yards (several really good shooters shot it too) and the results were all the same. I ordered a site pusher, and actually was able to push the sight over to be on target. Took 3 trips between my house and the range to get it sighted in, but I did manage to get it. Grouping is pretty good, 6 O'Clock sights take some getting used to, but you can get the hang of it.

I have had one stove pipe in 1500+ rounds. Other than that, no problems at all. I love the pistol, and am happy with the decision I made.

What "site pusher" did you get? Appreciate any info.

Our XD9 has just under 1000rds downrange now, zero (0) probs using wal-marts Federal and Winchester stuff.

Like MaHoTex also wanted a 9 for cheaper ammo then our several 30+ yr old 1911's (tho I love them 45's). The XD felt better in hand then the Glocks we rented...the grip safety is a non-issue here. The Glocks shot fine, maybe will get one someday for the kid to shoot, but totally enjoying the XD. I do think we will be modding the trigger tho' as the reset is crap compared to our 1911's...recently have tried a XD with a Powder River kit and it was awesome.

cool. I just got home from the range from shooting my new xd40 subcompact. great gun. I had trouble with the xd40sc I fired last time before I bought mine. then read up some more and found out about the 6 o'clock sights. I did much better today with my gun after figuring it out. I love this gun and had 0 problems in 150 rounds through it today
