    S&W M&P R8...illegal?...NO!

Hey folks, new to the forum here, but I've been searching and having trouble with this forum's search engine. For some reason simple searches like S&W don't retrieve any results for me. Anyways, I have a question about the S&W M&P R8. I'm sure some folks around here hate it, but I really like the idea of a revolver with a light rail. While not the best placement of the rail to trigger, it's a good idea imo. I was at a shop today, and the guy at the couter said it was illegal in CA, but I can't seem to figure out why. It doesn't appear to fall under any of the laws regarding restricted firearms. Is it just an arbitrary decision to make it illegal? Thanks.

Its not illegal to own, but if S&W hasn't spent the money to get it Rostered, then it is illegal for an FFL to sell it to you.

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

Interesting, so would that mean I could purchase out of state? Or since it has to be transferred to a CA dealer anyways, no such luck?

FUD. He was probably trying to get you to buy something he HAD in stock.

The 327 TRR (Tactical Railed Revolver) R8 is LEGAL to own in california.
So is the M&P version. There are subtle differences between the two.

The TRR uses conventional rifling (better for lead choices) and has a detachable lower and upper rail.
The M&P version has polygonal rifling and an integrated front rail.

These are scandium N frame revos. They feel very nice and light for their size.

They both feature champfered charge holes and accept moon clips if I remember correctly. Turners sells them for around 939.00ish if I recall correctly.

you could "purchase" one out of state, but you can't take possession of it out of state. You would need to have it transfered to a CA dealer to have DROSed to you. So, at that point, it needs to be in a CA-legal configuration (no AWs or NFA stuff) and on the Roster.

not the first time a dealer has lied or BS'ed a customer. Either he didn't know, was too lazy to look it up, or wanted to sell you somehting he had in stock so he wouldn't have to special order it.

You can have it transferred to a CA dealer. You will have to pay transfer feels and if it is being shipped from a dealer, he will need to get electronic approval using your local dealer's CFLC id: http://ag.ca.gov/firearms/cflcoverview.php

Your dealer should know how to do this, but looks like you either need a dealer who has a brain or talk to the store owner if it is an employee who supplied incorrect information.

Ok, thanks for the info everybody. I will definitely not be stopping by that dealer again. It's not even in my area, but they looked like they had a good selection on their site. The long gun counter guy was actually very helpful. Just the handgun counter guy was the trouble maker. I will stick to my trusty local dealer or gun shows from now on.

Lol, is there a way to do that? The edit function doesn't appear to let me change titles.

Mods, feel free to change thread title as you please!

after you click on edit, there should be a section to change the title. If you don't see it immediately, then click on the "go advanced" button, and you should be able to edit it there.
