question about foregrips

take for example if a gsg-5 pistol was on the approved pistol list, would it be legal to have the front handguard on it, like a standard mp5 would have? if i recall correctly the law states no forward grip on pistols but also states anything that protects from the barrel is a no no, but then i was wondering other states have them, so do people in other states who have them own an assualt weapon type pistol? or is it not considered by there state? or is it not considered at all. all of this is assuming a fixed 10 round magazine since the magwell is outside of the pistol grip and no buttstock
