    Brass Shavings

Just curious if anyone else gets brass shavings just rear of the ejection port on a Springfield Armory Mil-Spec 1911 (Parkerized). I was using PMC 230-grain ammo. Wondering how to remove this without damaging the finish.

shavings, or marks? marks look like little brass smears, shavings would actually be little bits of metal floating around.

marks are fairly normal. some Hoppe's on a patch and elbow grease should clean it up; at most use a plastic or bronze brush. you can mess with the ejector and port to get rid of it, but this is usually just a cosmetic problem and shouldn't be of concern unless there are other reliability issues.

shavings would be cause for worry. they could be the fault of an over-aggressive extractor, sharp or rough feed ramp or chamber, or some bad ejector/ejection port voodoo.

Don't bother, you'll get that shooting everytime and it will eventually go away or it will continue but not be as bad. If you really want to be OCD about it get a patch of CLP and rub it out.

Is your gun new/breaking in? My Kimber did that for break in but stopped afterwards. Just use some CLP or gun cleaner on it. If it really won't come out use a Q-tip with a tiny amount of hoppes #9.

Be careful with any high percentage ammonia based cleaners on parkerized finish, or blued finish. Copper removers are mostly recommended for removing copper from inside of barrels, not necessarily for removing brass from outside finishes. If you do try the copper remover, don't let it sit there for very long. I would stay away from it personally. I would just try a little Hoppes #9 as mentioned above on a soft cloth to remove those spots. I had similar marks on my M1A and Hoppes worked fine. HTH c good
