If you are going to shoot heavy loads in the gun you might want to look at Houge Grips that have padding on the back strap of the gun.
S&W Revolvers Beat the web of your hand with heavy loads. Houge has grips that ease that a bunch.

Didn't consider that 44 mag might be better with rubber grips. Good point. I do plan to switch it up between 44 mag and spl. If I can't find a set of wood grips I like, maybe I'll get rubber for the time-being. Sounds like Hogue or Pachmayr would be comfortable.
Never heard of Ahrends but they look pretty good. I like the Tactical Sq Butt Finger Groove, but also like the Retro Combat Sq Butt. Maple or Cocobolo (w/o oil) might look nice on a blued gun.

Altamont looks nice too but a lot of the ones I like are temporarily unavailable. Same thing with those Culina LLC grips - they look pretty interesting but have to wait for one to get posted? Maybe I can give them a call and ask if I can have one made to order.

In terms of Hogue wood stocks, I like this one. Not sure if I should get the big butt. It looks super comfortable and adds weight but never seen one on a gun in person.

Any thoughts on finger grooves and checkering? I probably won't have a chance to actually try any of them out before buying, so it's gonna have to be a gut feeling kinda thing but would like to as much input as possible. These things ain't cheap.Comment

While the Ahrends are okay comfort-wise, for some reason I just can't stand the way they look and they quickly get removed from any gun I buy that has them on when purchased. I have been shooting N frames since 1980 and for me the most comfortable set of stocks has always been the original coke bottle grips that came on my 1960 vintage Model 29. A very close second has been a set of Eagle grips I picked up at a gun show. I prefer wood over rubber largely due to the aesthetics.
Personally I find the original older style target stocks to fine and even in .44 magnum they don't hurt my hand or feel uncomfortable. Most of the rubber grips I have tried are too narrow in the back and I find that the recoil tends to be concentrated into a smaller area in the web of my hand causing them to feel harsher.
Right now I have a half dozen N frame Smiths, three of them being .44 mags, and all get shot with the original issue stocks.MLC member.

Herrett makes grips either ready-made or custom to a tracing of your hand the grip frame of your revolver. Options for type of wood, finish, checkering or not, etc. I have used the ready made "Shooting Star" grips on Ruger SA magnum revolvers and have a custom set of Jordan Troopers on an old model Colt Trooper.
