    First M&P Shield 9mm Malfunction

This was near the end of the mag, 2 rounds left under it so no excessive tension. The gun was very clean and lubed up nicely before the day at the range, this was round #142 of that session (ya, I keep count) This particular firearm had just under 450-lifetime rounds through it at that point.

    Ammo was Winchester white box.
You can see in the picture the damage to the inside lip of the rim where the extractor popped off of it, the bottom of the rim has a similar mark but on the outside of the rim where it came in contact with the lip of the brass of the next round, You can see in the picture where the 2 brass are in contact. The slide went back, the rim hit the lip of the next brass and dug in and got caught causing the extractor to pull off of the fired round. Did not notice this till I examined the brass later at home. I Fired 8 more rounds of the Winchester ammo and another 50 rounds of Tula ammo just to see if the issue would happen again, but it did not. Ran smooth.

This is the pistol I will be using for my CCW. Is this a common malfunction? The base clipping the lip of the next round? Is there anything I can do to try to prevent it in the future?

By the way, the white fill on the text there is from a Crayola Crayon it has held up through several outings, shooting and sitting out in the sun and cleanings. Never touched up. Holding up pretty good right?

Is it possible that the slight downward pressure on the round from the "Loaded Chamber Indicator" could be a contributing factor?

While mentioning it, Is there any issue with me removing that indicator? I believe it just needs to be on there to be sold new in the state correct?

Since it’s the only jam of the session it could be an out of spec round that caused it.

I would start running your hollow point SD Ammo through it and make sure that feeds, extracts and ejects without issues. Target Ammo is going to be less than perfect here and there.

Possibly an over pressurized round. You can see that the extractor tried to do it's job by the marks on the case rim! I would check the primer for a flattened primer and see how it compares to the other fired that day.

            My thoughts...

I think Deephouse and 5.56 nailed it. I would run a few boxes of other brands of target, as well as a couple of boxes of your defensive ammo to confirm reliability. I doubt this is a gun issue.

It *may* also matter if you are putting the gun on your CCW, depending on county regulations.

My shield hates HSTs, feeds everything else just fine. Run it with HPs

I have used White Box, and Miwall/LAX reloads without issue in my Shield. At least 600 rounds. Also my defense round is Hornady Critical Defense 115 Grain.

But I have had the same thing happen one time with White Box ammo in a Glock 17.
I think it was just a bad round, cause it never happened again.

I am at 2650 rounds on my Shield 9mm...not one problem...eats everything.

I will be curious to see what the reason is for your malfunction...keep us posted. (BTW.. I too have the CA model)

No problems with my Shields. Both 9mm. Keep us posted if. I have not fired any white box from them but will try next trip.

Blame the Ammo. Gun looks like it tried to do its job

Yeah that's probably an ammo issue.. It happens.

When I first started shooting my Shield with my reloads I had rounds that wouldn't chamber and I had to add an extra step in my reloading process. It seems to me Shields (at least mine) have a slightly tighter chamber compared to Glocks.
