Recommended 147gr 9mm for range practice?

I use HST 147gr standard pressure rounds for my HD/CCW pistols. I wanted to keep that consistent (as best I could) when I practiced at the range, without burning through money on expensive rounds. Is there a round someone can recommend, or am I screwed into using the expensive round?

I agree, i would stay with same gr. weight. Try SGAMMO or Freedom Munitions. At FM I am using the 147 new rounds until I get a comfort level with their ammo. May try their reman ammo as well to save a few cents a round. So far so good.

I picked up some Browning 9mm 147 for $12 when I was in Yuma. Very nice stuff.

        Sog,
I use the same rounds for my EDC Glock 19. I found the 147gr more accurate than 115 or 124 in this gun. I worked up several loads with plated 147gr bullets and decided on one that best simulates the recoil and accuracy of the commercial rounds. If you shoot a lot to keep your skills up, I would suggest that you consider reloading. Reloading components are finally readily available with the added benefit of some insulation from efforts to regulate/register ammunition purchases.

Non-hollow point (FMJ) 147 grain 9 mm is kind of hard to find in CA as far as retail outlets. You would save alot of $$ by switching to that for your range practice. Like the other poster said up above, freedom munitions is a good choice, especially while we can still order ammo online. They have reman 147 and 165 grain FMJ ammo starting at I believe .27 cents a round. And they offer free shipping on your first order if you order a certain amount.

I saw some posts about a month ago that were complaining of qc issues with freedommunitions. I'm not worried about one not working, but I am paranoid of one blowing up in the chamber and taking my hand/life with it. Is that really my only option?

147s will be an added expense that you really don't need, unless you reload yourself.

Winchester and Federal factory Full Military Jacket, FMJ, in 124 grain will provide all the accuracy you will need for a long time.

Look on SGammo and Ammoseek. You will find several 147 grain 9mm ammo at reasonable prices.

I just picked up some WWB 147 from Cabelas (online) for around $14 per box. I have not shot any yet though.

Check out Cabelas. Maybe they have a 4th of July sale. It will not be very easy to find 147 from local stores. Good luck.

I can reload 147's for less than retail. That grain also groups the best out of my guns as well. Trying to find factory 147 is difficult to find.

If the goal is to have ammunition the same as Federal's 147 grain standard pressure 9mm P9HST2, then why not just use Federal American Eagle 147 grain standard pressure 9mm AE9FP? According to the specs at http://www.le.vistaoutdoor.com/ammun...n/default.aspx the two should have the same characteristics, outside of terminal ballistics.

Freedom Munitions reman rounds are underpowered, at least in my experiences. I would NOT use their rounds trying to simulate the recoil of my self-defense rounds.

My sentiments, exactly. OP, is it an option for you to roll your own? Now would be a good time to get into the reloading game. You definitely won't save any money, but you will shoot exponentially more and can tailor your rounds exactly the way you want.

I recently split a case of federal HST 147g 9mm with another calgunner. Wanted to make sure it fed so shot 100 rounds of it at the range.

I was curious to see the difference between my usual 115g range ammo so I loaded the first mag alternating each round. Second mag loaded 5 rounds of 115 then 5 rounds of 147.

Could not tell the difference at all. Granted I'm a pretty new shooter but I really couldn't tell.

Even did 1 full mag of each, again couldn't tell. So as far as training with the same weights... I personally do not see any need. YMMV.
