    Non resident CA CCW issued

It happened. A Nevada resident obtained a non-resident CCW from the San Diego Sheriff in less time than it takes for resident CCW issuance and gets to carry unregistered guns.

Figured it would take less time than a resident
The only thing that is worse than an idiot, is someone who argues with one.

I'm the Nevada resident (former San Diegan) who obtained the CA non-resident CCW permit from SDSO.

Feel free to reach out. Happy to answer any questions about the process and my experience.

          Nice job! Congrats!

Are those permits good for two years or do you have to renew them every year?

It's the same two-year cycle and renewal process. Also, there's literally no difference between a CA resident and non-resident permit. Mine looks exactly like a resident's, except with a NV street address and DL.

Essentially no process difference between resident and non-resident applicants, with the following exceptions.

LiveScan is only available for residents. Non-residents must submit hard copy prints, which could lead to longer waits for DOJ clearance. If you're planning a trip to CA proximate to your initial interview, ask if you can do LiveScan while you're there.

As for classroom/quals, I believe I paid half as much overall as a resident would. Either can attend online courses, but range time in CA is expensive due to the requirements. Instructors often charge an additional $40 per gun, and limit how many you can add in a given session. Residents can pay in excess of $400 to get fully certified with a single gun. I paid $200 for my online class, and $65 total to qual with 6 guns. I then uploaded my certs to CCW Pro the same way a resident would.

I can't emphasize these two points enough for both residents and non-residents -

                1. After initial application, keep checking back multiple times a day for earlier interview openings. I jumped from Feb 2026 to May 2025 within a few weeks of doing so. However, I'm told that Los Angeles will cancel your application on the third date change attempt (Permitium). This was not an issue for me in San Diego (CCW Pro). I'm sure it's a choice by LA rather than a platform limitation.

                2. Once you have your initial interview and begin the process, proactively follow up with your licensing representative immediately after you've completed each step and inquire as to timing for the next one. Nudging things along will ensure you're not waiting unnecessarily for someone to notice where you are in the process.

                  What about firearm registration?

None of my handguns are registered in NV or CA, nor do they need to be for a non-resident CA CCW.

I only needed to provide make, model, caliber, and serial number in CCW Pro so they could be listed on the CA CCW.

That is itself an infringement of the 2A. Did they verify that your listed handgun(s) have 10 round mags?

There is no 10 round verification. Freedom week mags are legal to own and use in CA too.

If my recollection is correct, if you exit CA with 10+ round mags, you cannot bring them back.
