Moving from OC to Riverside County - CCW Questions

    Hi all,

Looking for some insight as I can't seem to find any detail searching through forums. I'm pretty sure I know the answer here (and it sucks), but here goes:

I've currently reside in and have had a CCW in OC for 6 years (Renewed it in late November this year).

We are now buying a home in Riverside County and will be moving in at the end of January.

    I'm guessing the following:

    1. I will need to tell OC Sheriff I'm moving. At that time, my current CCW will expire in 90 days from that date (it's assumedly honored in Riverside County for those 90 days...right?)

    2. I will need to start a brand new CCW application with RSO including the LiveScan, 16 hour course, Background Check and the whole ball of wax.

At the moment, the Riverside County site says the following regarding new CCW's: NOTE: Due to an increase in current CCW Permit applications the process is currently taking over a year to process.

If I have to wait a year to get a CCW in Riverside, this is going to suck. Tremendously. I have had one for 6 years in this State, taken the classes and literally just renewed 2 weeks ago.

Someone please tell me this isn't the case and all I need to do is walk into the RSO CCW office, show them my current OC CCW and they can expedite (wishful thinking, I know).

You pretty much answered your own questions (begrudgingly). But yes to both points above.

Can’t expedite (unless RSD decides to or you have an imminent threat). Check out the Riverside thread to get an idea on timeline. I feel the statement on their website may be outdated (since COVID 2020).

Cheers, 9Cal. Yes, very begrudgingly. Haha.

I was hoping at the least my LiveScan, classes, and Background Check would be excluded from process as I have a permit already and all I'd need to do is apply, but that's the world we live in I guess.

You may want to ask Riverside CCW unit about taking a new class. I moved from Placer County to Shasta County. Since my CCW from Placer was still good (Placer allows up to 180 days) All I had to do was take the renewal class and not a new class. I still had to do fingerprints.

Reach out to the CCW Unit. They are very cool, and would definitely give you any options if they exist.
          Then said He unto them...
"and he that hath no 1911 designed by my servant John Moses Browning,
let him sell his garment and buy one."
And they said, "Lord, behold, here are two Glocks."
And He said unto them, "Meh, it's a good start."

          Luke 22:36-38 (somewhat paraphrased)

I'm from Riverside and have been tracking the applicants' timeline over there.
it's been varying from around 3 months (low) to around 9 months (very high).
Average is around 6 months. No way 1 year unless something radically changed in last 2-3 months.

I applied 8-18-22 and have my interview coming up in Dec. 19. So, 4 months and counting.

All you can do is approach Riverside SO and ask them. Having a permit from another jurisdiction should make the process easier, but they have a significant backlog and State law to follow.

I think their processing time is way down from the year they posted. The wife of a good friend just got through the whole process in less than three months. Also, the staff in the CCW department are very accommodating and would probably bump you up if you have an existing permit.

You should probably email or call them and ask if they can help you out.

You'd think there would be some sort of expedited way to transfer to the other county rather than starting at phase 1. Get your AZ permit now (if you haven't already) so you are good in 32 other states.
Human beings only have two ways to deal with one another: reason and force. Force has no place as a valid method of social interaction, and the only thing that removes force from the menu is the personal firearm, as paradoxical as it may sound to some.

The U.S. city with the most restrictive gun laws in the nation, Washington, D.C., has the highest murder rate at 24 per 100,000.
The state with the most unrestrictive gun regulations, Vermont, has the lowest murder rate at 0.48 per 100,000.

Put in a call to the CCW unit yesterday. Gentleman there said I'd be starting from scratch. He said the next interview available is June 23, 2022, so about 6 months and 3 weeks out. He mentioned my OC permit being good for 90 days. I told him with the timelines involved I'd be unable to carry for about 4/5 months. He confirmed.

I will try and email or walk in and see what they can do. Sounds like they may be accommodating, but as someone said above, they do have State law to follow.

Will look into AZ/FL this time around as well.

As soon as you get your interview date start checking the web site several times a day to see if earlier dates come up. I was able to move up my date by months. You have to be diligent and check frequently because others are doing the same thing.

CCW permit in Riverside County is fast and easy

The CCW process in Riverside is now online. A simple google search of Riverside CCW will point you where you need to go.

Sheriff Bianco as made drastic changes to the CCW process. He hired more CCW investigators and opened a second CCW office in the Palm Springs area.

Additionally, multiple indoor ranges have been certified for the CCW class and weapons handling certification.

I would be shocked if your entire process took more than 3 months.

The main delay will be caused by the DOJ which the Sheriff's department cannot control.
