Just sticking my two cents in here qmony but.... It is NOT a RIGHT to get a CCW it is a PRIVILEGE. We here in San Joaquin County are lucky enough to have a Sheriff that is issuing CCW permits. If you lived in Alameda County or San Francisco County your chances are almost "0" that you would be able to obtain a permit. However I believe like you that if you're legal to buy a gun you should be able to carry that gun, but that's just my own personal belief and not what the law is. I put in my application in August of last year and I am happy to wait the year if it means I get an approval.

A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.
That is the text of the Second Amendment. I do not believe that it is a "privilege" to carry. If one subscribes, as they should, that the Constitution is the law, our Right, not "privilege" is in fact being infringed.
That being said it seems we are on the same page. I am glad that we have a sheriff that will follow the law as he should. It is, however, frustrating to have to wait a year to be "allowed" to exercise a Right granted by the Constitution.NRA Life Member

Carrying one way or another is a right. Whether it be open carry or concealed carry. This is why Peruta won in the first place.
Banning open carry along with not allowing people carry strictly for the reason of self defense is a violation of the 2nd ammendment.
The government is already treating it as a privilege and not a right.
Rights are God given, permission is dependent upon other people. So even though this is our constitutional right, we have given it away and is now a privilege dependent on the SJC sheriff's dept.Comment

You are exactly right. But, that doesn't make it suck any less.
Sorry for ranting. I know others around here have it much worse.NRA Life Member

The bill of rights, such as the 6th ammendment, we're created to let people live their life as close to as if there were no government. Don't take my word for it though. It's stated in the federalist papers.
The 2nd ammendment for instance, would exist even if there were no government. All mammals are born with the right to try and protect themselves. They are a virtue of your humanity.... aka they are God given.Comment

I applied in Feb of this year. "Self Defense" is the only "good cause" you need to write down. I went long-winded on mine and said, "Self defense outside of the home."Howdy all, I could use some up to date info on CCW status and procedure for San Joaquin County. Can anyone with recent personal experience with it give me some insight?
I see they are shall issue on the CCW map. I'm trying to collect as much info on it as I can.
What are current good cause statements? I'm guessing it takes a little be more than sitting down and demanding "muh rights!"
The procedure on the first post of this thread is the same except for the contact Sgt Palmer part. Use the number on the link below to set up your appointment. You HAVE to set up an appointment to drop off your paperwork. They don't take walk-ins. Also, the links on the first post are broken, so use the PDFs on the link below to download and fill out your forms. READ EVERYTHING and SIGN NOTHING. You sign everything in the presence of an investigator the day you drop off your paperwork.

This type of thing is part of the problem. Just because he can get one somewhere else, why should he have to? If he is not a felon, can purchase firearms, and resides in SJC there is no reason whatsoever for denial. I find this outrageous.NRA Life Member

Any recent renewed ccw's lately? My buddy and I both did our renewed paperwork and went down and turned everything in.
His expires in about 15 days. Mine has one more month. We both turned our packets in about 3-1/2 months ago.
Neither of us have heard any word.Comment

Yeah, that's pretty messed up. If this is the policy, I hope future applicants are informed during the initial interview and not after going through the 1 year approval process.
I would be pretty upset.Comment

At the time that he applied he was working at the post office but because of the horrendous wait times in SJC he wasn't able to get it prior to becoming a CO. He mentioned that the interviewer was being a real A** about him being law enforcement and still wanting to get a CCW. Interviewer told him that law enforcement should be held to higher standards thats why they have to qualify for their off duty carry every 3 months, and that he shouldn't be trying to get around that by getting the CCW that you only have to renew every 2 years. But they happily took my friends money.Comment
