San Joaquin

Two things that I haven't seen discussed:
The first is the CCW process in San Joaquin County is EXPENSIVE compared to other states like Utah, Arizona, and Nevada. Why can Utah get it done for $51.00 if I remember correctly, while San Joaquin County is $228?
The second is the license itself looks very unprofessional. It reminds me of a high school detention slip folded in half and laminated. In fact, my kid's public school I.D. looks more professional. Can't the Sheriff's Dept. afford a real I.D. Card maker and issue us some similar to Utah or Arizona's LTC Permits? They really don't cost that much. Darn thing barely fits in my wallet.Comment

It's not so much the "appearance" but the practicality of carrying the thing it your wallet. It basically doesn't fit, even after you trim it down.Comment

I think it's not just San Joaquin, all use the same FD4501 form, which is standard to all counties. So even if SJC wants to change it, they are forced to follow State standards, which is obviously sub-par compared to other states. If the US 1st amendment were treated like the 2nd amendment by US politicians, we will need a license to speak in public, need a background check to buy a book, and can only buy one every 30 days. The application fee is $95, the live scan fingerprint is $120. 20% of the $95 is collected up front ($19), the remaining $76 is collected when you pick up the permit. Not sure if SJC takes a cut from the $120 live scan, but I think $95 for the application is reasonable considering how much investigation time some applications may take. Two things that I haven't seen discussed:

Actually, Contra Costa issues a printed card similar to your drivers license in addition to the state form. Apparently it's a new standard that some of the counties are trying to get the state to move to.Last edited by 209Brent; 10-14-2014, 8:48 PM.Comment

Sadly the fees are all with in the limits set by california law. If he wanted to make it harder he could require us all to get a psychological exam costing up to 100 dollars.Comment

I belive that there was a rolling fee for the live scan I'll have to check my form when I get homeThe application fee is $95, the live scan fingerprint is $120. 20% of the $95 is collected up front ($19), the remaining $76 is collected when you pick up the permit. I just left the SJC Sheriff's office minutes ago to add another weapon to my application. Before I left I asked the status of my application and told the lady behind the desk when I applied (May 02, 2014) and she told me that they haven't gotten that far and she doesn't know when they will.Comment

Yeah I agree with you here though at the same time I agree with some of the others that say they are just happy to have one. I just think the state could do better. They even messed up the SN of one of my weapons and had to use whiteout and hand write it in. The laminating sheets started coming apart after about a week. I used super glue and put it in around the edges which took care of that problem. As others mentioned, it does not fit well in the wallet. The second is the license itself looks very unprofessional.
