SMSO's CCW qual is 12 rounds at 10 yards, 12 rounds at 7 yards and 12 rounds at 5 yards into that silhouette with 80% to pass. No time limit.

Each approved vendor has the latitude to set their own qual requirement. That is why when you contacted BAT they said it was like the FBI qual. It sounds like BAT made their San Mateo CCW qual based on the FBI's.
BAT has been doing CCW qual's for multiple counties and states for a long time. They have one class that meets the requirements of all of them. They did not see a reason to have a watered down class just for San Mateo County.

I setup one for October but it sounds like dates are going to move due to issues with getting a range.

Thanks for that info! That's not too bad then!

Politically correct like Santa Clara County made Metcalf Range- no heads allowed on targets.

That's really odd. There was a huge push from DOJ that seemed to be approving everyone around the same time period (mine included). From what I saw, the "shot clocks" were only with the Sheriff where they had to make a decision in like 90 days of application or 30 days of receiving live scan results, whichever was longest. I have not seen anything related to a timelimit for when Livescan results needed to be complete. From posts prior to Bruen I did see numerous people waiting 6-12 months just for livescans... Thought that wasn't happening anymore though. =/

Just a little update from me. Livescan completed on 7/9. Firearms still showing “in progress”. Anyone else have a huge delay? About a month ago when I asked the investigator, they just pointed me in the direction of the DOJ. So basically a dead end. Is there some sort of “shot clock” that gives me options to push back? I guess all my advantage of getting my App in day 1 has gone away.

That's daunting for classes that have all kinds of other things as part of their curriculum, so find one that's all about putting holes in the paper accurately enough to comfortably pass. You don't need to be a rock star, cowboy quick draw, spin the gun on your finger, use a mirror over your shoulder- just comfortably meet the test criteria. This is also what you should be practicing before the qualification as part of every range trip leading up to qual day.

All that other stuff you can do anytime and have choices about where to do it. For sure, there are folks that can do all kinds of other shooting & drills- and that's great- but for a credential to get your CCW, best to know you do that well enough you aren't overly concerned- take care of business first.

Wow that was easy, I just went from having a live fire class scheduled in May 2023 to next month with Alpha Dog Tactical. Hats off to SMSO for stepping up the process and getting folks live qualified ASAP.

I sent you a PM. I've taken Pistol 3 and Pistol 4, which to my understanding is essentially the CCW1 and CCW2 course. I'm not sure what the others are offering and they may be comparable. But I thought BAT was well worth the money.

Pistol 3 was mostly working safely and efficiently out of the holster, tap rack, speed/tactical/admin reloads, the beginnings of rapid fire, one handed/weak handed shooting, intro to firing while moving, and a practice qual - everyone passed (Sonoma County qual I believe)

Pistol 4 was definitely worth it. Really gets into quick and efficient draws, fast target acquisition and rapid fire, moving targets and firing while moving and keeping an eye on your surroundings (at the same time), using cover/concealment and being ambidextrous to maximize concealment/cover, a light version of force and force, and the FBI qual - everybody passed. I'm not sure all instructors have the same exact stuff, but this one was taught by Evan - really good guy.

I feel like this class is more geared towards actually using a firearm IRL. They prep you sufficiently to pass the harder test. I might have had the lowest grade in the FBI qual at 5 shots missed (out of 60, all at 25 yds). I don't want to blame my tools, but I was the only one with a 3.1" barrel. They did saw the CCW qual will be easier than the FBI qual.

Yea, that's a bit much. Aren't CCW classes typically 8 hours?
