Renewal application submitted 10/23. Will be interesting to see how long this takes, given the lengthy waits for new ones.

I also applied in Sept of 2022, I got interviewed in June 14. Then I got another call from the interviewer late Aug to clear out some of my answers from her first interview. After that, I got the email/text and call from SMSO that I was approved and needed to pay the final fee prior to range qual.
I have spoken to Gina Sheridan, who emailed me the lists of vendors for range qual. I have also verified with her that the psych eval applies only to applicants from July 1, 2023 onwards. Those who applied earlier are not required to do so. I also emailed and got a response from Robert Pronske who clarified that San Mateo residents will only take 8 hours training. However it will change to 16 hours at the start on next 2024.

That's encouraging to hear that permits are still being processed. Keeps the dream alive!

I got an automated call, text and email Friday morning 10/6/2023 from the Sheriff's office, advising that my application has been approved and to pay the final fee. I was wondering why there was no mention on the psych exams. After my work, I followed the instructions on the email and paid for the final fee.
Got another email after a few minutes, and the instructions were to call the Sheriff's office to schedule an appointment for range qualification, still no mention of any psych exams.
So I went to the SMC sheriff's website and that's where I read, that "The Sheriff's Office will be requiring psychological testing for all NEW applicants effective July 1, 2023."
To my understanding, psych exams will only be given to those who applied from July 1, 2023 and not before.
Anyway, I'm waiting for a call back from Jennifer re my request for range qual. I will verify with ther once she calls me back.

    CCW Timeline

Anyone have updates to their timelines?

I completed the psych evaluation 7 weeks ago and haven't heard back yet. Was told during the Sheriff's interview that someone would contact me 2 weeks after the psych evaluation.

"Taken for evidence", not likely to be accepted.

Most likely that is correct. The final word though comes from the SMSO, but that is, in general, correct.

Spoke a bit with the SMCSO and it doesn't appear that the paper license is a big deal for us and the card itself will suffice. They're waiting for further information before informing us (understandable, last thing they want to do is send out conflicting info) but upon discussion with them I believe I'll be fine sticking with just the card and getting the paperwork when renewal comes due.

IANAL, what you do is up to you of course.

Thank you as well for posting about the paper license. I'll be making my appointment to pick that up.

I went to the Hall of Justice today after scheduling an appointment Friday to get the FD4501 form. The person I worked with was very pleasant and the process was quick and easy. The form was ready for me when I got there and all I had to do was provide my thumb print. I did not know the form was 8.5x11". Took photo of it on my phone. Made a copy to keep in secured spot in vehicle and copied a reduced size one to keep in wallet. It was stated to me that most counties are now using the Permitium site and plastic cards, so most counties should honor the plastic CCW. But the word "should" is key and is subjective.

I also did confirm that we cannot change firearms on our permits until renewal or unless we experienced some loss prior to renewal. Additionally, no notice is being given existing permittees that the FD4501 is available as a supplement, so it is up to us to let our friends know by word of mouth.

You can send her an email to schedule a time to get a the FD-4501, it just takes a few minutes, but some early licensees may need to affix their right thumbprint to the 4501. It's not a Livescan or anything, just ink on the thumb and thumbprint on the permit, then you can take it.

Jennifer also recommended making copies of the FD-4501 and keeping a copy in each vehicle that you could be traveling to other counties with, but the card itself is sufficient for any LE agency in San Mateo County.
Thank you for this info. I've reached out to her to see about getting it. I've also let my other friends know about this change. Too bad there was not a proactive notice to those of us walking around with plastic permits only.
