Crap...
I don't care about being interviewed again, but if it's not done in a timely manner then it might be impossible to book the training/qualification within the 90 days prior to the permit timing out.

I recently had my interview for CCW renewal. Deputy told me that it is indeed a policy change, and they intend to interview everyone applying for renewal going forward. I didn't ask when the policy change took effect.
Interview took about 20 minutes and was pretty straightforward, going over many questions that were on the written application: any fights, "incidents" with guns, domestic violence restrating orders, etc. I didn't feel like they were looking for any "gotcha" answers.
However, it was kind of disappointing becasue (i) it was about a month after I filed my renewal application before I could get an interview; and (ii) he told me to anticpate about another three weeks for a response / clearance to do the renewal class. This is annoying, beacuse you can't start renewal process until 90 days prior to expiration. If classes fill up or you have schedule conflicts on available class dates, it kind of crowds you as your renewal date approaches. This is much worse than the recently reported "file renewal, get cleared for class in a week." I guess we are still way better off than in some other counties, but it appears the San Mateo County pendulum is swinging in the wrong direction.Leave a comment:

San Mateo did recently change their policy. Please don't be that guy (or those guys) who flood them with modification requests and prompt them to shut it down again.Leave a comment:

Btw, in my very recent interview, I learned that there are no longer restrictions to modifying what guns you have on your permit now. It used to be policy that we had to wait for renewal time to change out firearms. Hopefully this holds true going forward that we can now change out at any time with a modification request. I am doing a gun swap with this renewal as I was waiting per the previous policy. I will see about a change again early next year after I acquire something new I want.
I asked Jennifer a couple of months ago and she said I still had to wait for renewal because they're swamped?

Consider, with the recent (this week) "Vote of No Confidence" for the Sheriff's #1 non-sworn guy and ergo the Sheriff- I suspect CCW's will take longer.Leave a comment:

I think this page should be retitled, "San Mateo County" so its not confused with the city of San Mateo.Leave a comment:

I was not asked for an interview for my recent renewal application or for my original application in 2022. However, I actually did do an extensive interview back in the "good cause" days, prior to being denied, so maybe that counted? My wife applied a few months after I did, and she did do an interview, so we will see what happens when she submits a renewal. She did say the interview was very chill though. They just want to see if you sound crazy I guess.
Sorry about the triple post earlier. The server was very slow and would hang every time I pushed "post reply", which I did three times.Leave a comment:

My renewal was approved in early August. I was not asked to complete an interview.

Why? Surely in both cases, something is better than nothing (for the individual carrying); if you are carrying, you don't lose the option to run.
If you are saying you'd personally prefer to have a larger caliber and more rounds, that's fine, I just don't understand why that preference should be mandated.
"Guns for me but not for thee". IMO, you can't consider yourself a 2A advocate if you are ok with arbitrary rules that prevent law-abiding responsible citizens from the right defend themselves.
It should be up to the individual to choose which pistol they want to use for their own protection. We already have the roster to determine what is "safe" for us, we don't need another layer. As a side note, I'd argue shot placement is more important than caliber.
Since my Ruger LCR 22 (hasn't failed in over 3000 rounds with federal punch) is not allowed, I was then considering a 32 revolver. Also not allowed... minimum approved caliber in San Mateo is 380.Leave a comment:

I think SMCSO has had the caliber restrictions for a long time. I saw a PDF on the subject online that looked like it was years old. They also have had a minimum capacity of five rounds for some time, so no derringers. I'm guessing the permitted calibers and 5 round rule were initally instituted for off duty LEO's, on the theoty that the SO's wanted them to have some effective minimum level of firepower. Then when CCW became avaialbe to ordinary civlians, the rules just carried over. Both rules make sense to me.👍 1Leave a comment:

My renewal comes up in a few months. I also was not interviewed the first time around so I'll be interested to hear from those who are being interviewed for the first time for their renewal.Leave a comment:

Interesting when I search this San Mateo forum thread I see other people say 22's are fine assuming you can pass the qual with it. Maybe that changed.
I responded to the CCW officer if they could have the decision reviewed as 22LR is not mentioned in their "unauthorized calibers" list that they sent me (and they said any caliber larger than what is on the list is also unauthorized); will update this thread when I hear back.Leave a comment:
