A little more info regarding the range qualification last Saturday.

Come to the qualification with three loaded mags for each gun. After you fill out the forms at the table you holster an unloaded weapon, take your mags, grab a target and clip the taget into place. Then you move to the 5 yard line. When instructed you load the gun and fire on command. Replace the used mag with a new one and holster your loaded gun. Walk to the 7 yard line and fire on command. Replace the last mag, holster the loaded gun, move to the 10 yard line and fire on command. Confirm the gun is unloaded and holstered before picking up your brass and returning to the table to holster your second gun and repeat the process. Overall, it takes about 10 minutes per gun to qualify.

Sad, I'm OCD enough to appreciate this level of detail. Maybe someone else is too...

Range qualification was Saturday, I got a text, VM and email by 10AM Monday requesting payment thru Permitium. Scheduling the permit pick up was also thru Permitium and I'm scheduled to pick up mine this Thursday. From beginning (LiveScan) to getting the permit was 17 months and 2 days with no delays due to insufficient documentation.

The Sheriff’s CCW information page now says Walnut Creek residents are to apply with WC police and has an embedded link. Unfortunately the linked page only has general information about WCPD so best to call for information. The chatbot was no help.

The Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office (CCCSO) previously processed CCW permit applications for Walnut Creek residents. Moving forward, the Walnut Creek Police Department (WCPD) will now handle all CCW applications for city residents.

WCPD is in the process of developing an online application system to make this transition as smooth as possible. We appreciate your patience as we update our website with detailed instructions and application links in the near future.

Has anyone recently been issued a CCW from the San Ramon Police Department? What was the process for applying? The only information available on the City of San Ramon website was directions to email the PD for additional information. I have done so but have not received a reply.

My situation is that I have a CCW from the Contra Costa Sheriff's Office expiring in September. I've heard that San Ramon allows red dot sights and if that is true I would like to renew my CCW through San Ramon if that is possible. If I need to apply as a new applicant it may not be worth the effort depending upon what is required.

Which CoCo City PDs are requiring psych tests for new applicants? Pleasant Hill is, and it's the same test that officer candidates have to take. The test is 4+ hours long and costs $415. Curious how that compares to other cities as I have not read of others having to jump through that hoop.

Has anyone one gone through the Martinez Police Dept to get a CCW? I can't go through the Sheriff anymore.

The weapon requirements for Martinez are so vague as to be useless.

How strict is Martinez on references and psych testing?

It's almost not worth going through all that sh-t again. It took 17 months to get my CCW through the Sheriff's office.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

I am surprised that nobody has mentioned the recent lawsuit by the Second Amendment Foundation against Contra Costa County. (Or, perhaps there is a post and I missed it. Sorry if this is duplicative.)

In any case, on June 17, 2026, the SAF filed the action.

This action challenges the concealed carry weapon (“CCW”) permit issuance policies and practices of the Defendants that prohibit CCW applicants and those issued valid CCW permits from including and attaching popular, safety¬ enhancing attachments on the handguns they legally carry for self-defense as part of the CCW permit. Specifically, Defendants’ policies and practices prohibit the attachment and use of red dot sights and flashlights on CCW firearms. Additionally, Defendants outright ban the carry of Single Action Only (SAO) firearms, including, by name, 1911 platform (“1911-Style”) handguns, which are themselves quite popular. These policies violate the Second Amendment under the standard set forth in New York State Rifle & Pistol ***'n, Inc. v. Bruen, 597 U.S. 1 (2022) and are thus unconstitutional."

If they do win, CoCoCo will allow it, but each enhancement to your firearm will be an additional 8 hour class and range qual. Red Dot: +8 hours. WML: +8 hours. 1911: +8 hours. Oh, and don't forget the additional fees, levy's, admin costs and licenses for each.
